Hackwell greets at Duff's CAREER TRAINING Doreen Hackwell greeted people coming to Duff's United Church on April 12, Easter morning. The Easter banner was hung, Easter Lilies (donated by Blyth's Knechtel store were placed on top of the piano and a church full of people greeted Rev. James Murray as he proceeded down the aisle carrying the lit Christ Candle. Glenda Carter played Walk Worthy while Rev. Murray read from Colossians followed by the choir singing the song. Rev. Murray announced that the church now has a web site and the sermons are available through it at http://www.hows.net/NOG2WOBUC Shannon McGavin read the gospel lesson from John 20: 1-18. The Junior choir sang, Every Morning is Easter Morning. Rev. Murray called the young worshippers forward and asked them if they had ever heard the saying, "If you have a burden talk about it with someone and the burden decreases. If you have joy share it with others and it doubles." Share the good news of Easter with others, he said. The junior choir then got the congregation clapping and singing to the song (from Godspell) Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord. Marion Godkin read the second lesson from Acts 10: 34-43. Rev. Murray's sermon was called, "Are we Good Friday or Easter People?" For Mary, Jesus' dying on the cross was such a tragic loss, he said. Here was a man who had changed her life, the one person she had pinned her hopes upon, was dead. It was Easter, but she was still living in a Good Friday world, Rev. Murray said. It was probably the same for Peter and the disciples, but especially for Peter who had been with him in the beginning. He had such hopes, such expectations for the future, and it seemed to be This week the Hop-A-Thon for Muscular Dystrophy was held at Walton PS and close to $600 was raised for the cause. The children had to hop down bunny trails, hop for two minutes and were rewarded with buttons that said, 'some bunny special', candies, hop-a-thon certificates, stickers and crayons and colouring books. They also enjoyed watching the video, Peter Rabbit. The children did a lot of Easter crafts this week as well. YFU is offering a $500 scholarship to 13 students, so that they can become part of an international family. Students must be between 15 and 18 years old and enrolled in high school. Make this the opportunity of a life time. Live with a host family coming true on Palm Sunday. Then it got worse very quickly. They not only dealt with grief but also with the guilt as they all, just as Jesus predicted, had betrayed him. The sun had risen on the first Easter morning, but Peter and the others were still in the deep darkness of Good Friday. "Today is Easter," said Rev. Murray, "but somehow to a lot of us it's still Good Friday. Like Peter we have guilt and are hurt over broken relationships. It's another Easter Sunday in a Good Friday world." But Rev. Murray said he believes people cannot begin to understand or experience Easter unless they have been through Good Friday, unless they have been where Mary was, with hearts broken, eyes blurred with tears, our spirits crushed by grief. "You don't get to the joy and chocolate Easter Sunday without going through the pain of Good Friday. But recognizing our pain alone is not enough. We need to let Jesus touch the pain, if he is to heal. it. We must first set him free from the cross and meet him at the empty tomb so he can give us new life." After the disciples gathered. They were afraid, uncertain about the future, guilt stricken, lost. Yet they gathered and began to tell the stories of the transformation one more time. They shared and retold one another of their own resurrection experiences. They told of how Jesus was alive to them even today. They got on the road again. "So we stand here today, with confidence and we too can proclaim, 'He is Risen! He is alive forevermore!" Rev. Murray dedicated a hymn book in the memory of infant Taylor Rae McGavin. and bunny eggs. The kindergartens made edible Easter nests. Ice cream cone bunny cupcakes were made and decorated with marshmallows. Mrs. Bennett made some dye by putting crepe paper in hot water. They tried out a new way of colouring eggs called marbling. They added vinegar and cooking oil to the dye and then swirled the eggs in this mixture with some very beautiful results. They also cooked onion skins to make a yellowish dye. Andrew Elliott was the lucky child who took home Coke and Pepsi this weekend. and attend a local high school in Germany or Finland. A Wroxeter man was fined $1,000 in Ontario's Provincial Court last week for not filing his personal income tax return for 1996. According to Revenue Canada, the court ordered Stephen J. Housser to file the return within 90 days. When people are convicted of failing to file tax returns, in addition to any fines imposed by the courts, they are still obligated to file the return and pay the full amount of taxes owing, plus interest and penalties. "If you have not filed returns for previous years, or have not reported all your income, you can still voluntarily correct your tax affairs," said Mark Deakin, director, Kitchener/Waterloo Tax Services Office. Revenue Canada will not penalize or prosecute such individuals if they make a full disclosure before the Department begins any action against them. Under the Income Tax Act, anyone who fails to file a return as required, or fails to comply with a court order to file, is guilty of an offence. On summary conviction that person is liable to a fine of between $1,000 and $25,000 or fined and imprisoned for up to 12 months, in addition to any other penalty. People who deliberately fail to file their returns, or fail to report and pay their taxes owing according to the law, hurt the honest taxpayers, who as a result, end up paying more than their fair share. Honest businesses are also put at a competitive disadvantage with those who cheat. Prosecution is used by Revenue Canada to deter deliberate non- compliance with the tax laws and help make the system more fair. crucifixion, the Kids hopping for funds at WPS Youth exchange seeks students 15TH TORONTO TOY SHOW, Sunday April 19, 10am-4pm, The Inter- national Centre, 6900 Airport Road, Mississauga.
