From the Minister's Study Making Easter meaningful Pastor Les Cook Blyth Community Church of God The Easter holiday is over. On Maundy Thursday evening we had our foot washing and communion service. On Good Friday morning, many churches held services. Some even got up extra early on Sunday for a sunrise service before their regular Sunday morning gatherings. What a great way to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord, the most important observance of the church calendar. However, observing and celebrating just because our calendar says it's time to do so is just religion. So to make the Easter season a meaningful experience we must look deeper to find applicable lessons for our daily lives. Carol Ann Weaver and Cate Friesen present Journey Just Begun, a concert in memory of Weaver's mother, Miriam L. Weaver, who died in September, 1997 of leukemia. Weaver is a music professor at Conrad Grebel College. She composes and performs her own music. Her first CD is Daughter of Olapa - The Music of Carol Ann Weaver. She also composed the music drama, Quietly Landed? about women of Mennonite background. It has been performed throughout the US and Canada. Weaver is known for her stylistic fusions - avant garde, jazz, world music, funky. A recent year of research in Kenya has brought African influences into her music. Her music often incorporates poetry and dramatic elements, relating to environmental themes, women's stories, spirituality. Friesen is "an important new Canadian musical presence," according to the CBC. Appearing as a performer on major Canadian folk festival stages, and a frequently touring artist, Friesen writes music which stems from folk, often pushing the edges of the singer/songwriter category. She hosts Toronto's CJRT Christ's activities following his resurrection reveals to us many of those lessons. In the Bible, John records some of Christ's appearances to the people he knew. He appeared to Mary Magdalene, who had come to tend to the dead body of the teacher that she had come to know and love. She was not looking for a miracle, she was simply going through the grieving process, and yet Christ appeared to her and comforted her. The disciples had all gone home to try and solve the mystery of the missing body; they only wanted to know how this would fit into their theology. "Did he say three days in the tomb? What did the prophets say about it in scripture? Where does this leave our ministry now?" And when Christ appeared to them he solved the mystery, Absolutely Folk Radio show and has also hosted on CBC National Radio.• She has released two popular CDs Wayward and Tightrope Waltz. Miriam L. Weaver, 1922-1997 was a woman devoted to the Mennonite Church, MCC and various other Mennonite Institutions for which she worked during her lifetime. A professor at Eastern Mennonite Church and an instructor at Eastern Mennonite High School, (both in Harrisonburg, Virginia) she was answered their questions, told them to receive the Holy Spirit and to carry on the ministry he had started. Thomas wanted only to satisfy his doubtful curiosity. When Christ came to him he did not scold him for being skeptical. He proved who he was by showing him his scars and said to him you believe because you have seen, but blessed are those that believe without seeing. These are perfect examples of the grace of God. He is not concerned if we have a full understanding of how Christ was man and God at the same time, or if we have our theology all straight. It is not an issue with Him if we are skeptical and insist on learning everything the hard way or if we already have also a frequent volunteer for MCC and Mennonite Mutual Aid. She was a single parent for three daughters - her husband Melvin Weaver was killed in a plane crash when their youngest child was only two months old. Both her love of music and her inspiring faith make the connection between this concert and the KW- based spiritual journal, Vox Feminarum a natural one. A new piece, written for this concert by Weaver, In the Late of Summertime will be performed in her memory. an awareness of a greater force than ourselves. God loves everyone of us right here, right now, no matter what we are doing or where we are. He proved it at Easter a long time ago and continues to prove it with his love and grace to this very day. Yes, the Easter holiday is over, but the season has just begun. From now until the day of Pentecost (50 days from Easter) the Christian community will be observing the activity of Christ during the time between his resurrection and his ascension into heaven. But the applicable Easter season should carry on for us throughout the entire year. God meets us wherever we are, so we can always live in his love and grace. Likewise we need to always be continuing the ministry Christ began, by treating those around r with the love and grace we have ourselves received.
