THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 8, 1998. PAGE 27. Blyth PS news Grade 3/4 students welcome new teacher A NEW TEACHER IN GRADE 3/4 By Alicia Marshall Grade 3/4s have been eagerly anticipating the arrival of spring by being involved in group and individual Easter activities, reading stories and poems about spring, and singing spring songs. The students are busily working in math by continuing their work with the multiplication tables, reviewing how to gather data and display it in graph form, and completing some estimation activities. NEWS Congratulations to Jamie Lewis, Grade 8 and Heather Elliott, Grade 6, who won prizes at the District Level of the Remembrance Day Contest sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion. This competition was the third level in which these girls have been winners. Jamie received third prize for her poem entitled "Memories," and Heather was awarded second prize for her poster entitled "Lest We Forget". GUEST WHAT — A NEW TEACHER AT BLYTH! By Michelle Cook For the rest of the school year, Mrs. Wise-Hellmuth will be out on a maternity leave while Miss Siemon will be taking her place. Miss Siemon says, "I really enjoy teaching here even though I have only been here for three days. Everyone is so kind. The teachers and the students make me feel so welcome. When I am out on the playground supervising, some students will come up and say "Hi" and I don't even know who they are." She lives on the outskirts of Mitchell, so it takes about 30 minutes to drive here. Just before she came to Blyth, Miss Siemon was supply teaching at many schools in Huron and Perth Counties, but from October to January, she was teaching in Hensall. Teaching doesn't stop Miss Siemon from participating in other activities. She plays baseball, sews, reads and her favourite pastime is one of mine, hanging around with her friends. KEEP SENDING THE GROCERY TAPES! The Resource Centre has started to become more confident in reaching its goal of $90,000 from each store. We have $71,936.83 from Scrimgeour's and $47,884.13 from Zehrs. Keep in mind though that we will need many more tapes to finally reach our destination. Two hundred brand new interesting books have been placed on the shelves in the Resource Centre. We were able to purchase these books because of our participation in the Book Fair held last December. As I took a glance around the Resource Centre, the new books seemed very adventurous and interesting. If you have a child attending Blyth Public School send him/her with grocery tapes, as well as an eagerness to come and explore the new books in the Resource Centre. GRADE 6/7 By Taylor Hesselwood The Grade 6/7 class had' been busily working on their term three work. The class has begun algebra and is learning about varieties and equations. They will soon be using their creative minds to publish and illustrate their own books. Grade 7 will be publishing a collection of various types of writing including poetry, narrative, expository, and descriptive pieces of writing. Both grades have now started in the new "Canadian Spelling 2.1" spelling book. Each week a new spelling rule is introduced. The students have just recently completed a unit on constellations and are going to begin studying the planets. The class will soon be learning about a computer program entitled Hyperstudio and will be presenting their reports using this new Continued on page 29 Well done! Jamie Lewis accepts a certificate from the Royal Canadian Legion Blyth Branch from Rick Elliott for her award-winning Remembrance Day poem. Proud papa Rick Elliott presents a Blyth Legion certificate of recognition to his daughter Heather who won the Legion sponsored Remembrance Day poster contest.
