Redeemer College brings show to Blyth
The theatre arts department at
The Redeemer College will present
a new (touring) production of
Stranger In The Land, written and
directed by Raymond Louter,
faculty member. For this
production the department
welcomes a number of alumni to
the ensemble.
Stranger In The Land is the
recollection of a series of Dutch
war and emigration stories by Anne
VanderBerg, the central figure in
this retelling. Like the characters
who experienceroccupation and,
later, emigration first hand, she
bears the scars of a child born in
that community.
The play is, in a way, Anne's
encounter with the hard choices her
ancestors had to make, both in The
Netherlands and in Canada.
Federated Women's Institutes of
Ontario (FWIO) Membership Co-
ordinator Lorna McGrath recently
announced that May will be
recruitment month for the Women's
Institute -(-WI). In her announce-
ment McGrath stated that "the
challenge is to gain one new
member per member."
McGrath encourages WI
members to take responsibility for
the future success of the organiza-
tion. She recommends delivering
invitations to friends, neighbours
and relatives. She also recommends
that Branches assess the needs of
current and prospective members,
to compare with the programs the
Branches are now offering. Are

welcomed everyone. After Grace
was sung, a wonderful meal was
served by Millie and Ruth Sauve,
who did the preparation. The lovely
flower decorations on each table
were supplied and arranged by
Ruth. Happy Birthday was sung to
Dorothy Smith who was served her
pie and ice cream with a candle.
Gordon Blake was the door prize
winner and Dorothy Smith won the
50/50 draw.
It is a journey which disregards
the convention of linear time, but it
is also a journey into the interior
landscape of memory.
In the tradition of docudrama the
play flows from one event to the
next on a tapestry of visual images
created by the actors, the songs
they sing, and by actual
photographic images of the time.
Set designer David Antscherl has
created a wide open space spanned
by a dramatic lift-bridge on which
actors play, work and sing.
The cast includes alumni Karen
Sheil as Anne VanderBerg, Andrea
Vander Kooij as Truus, and
students Ryan McKenna as Jan and
Jennifer McNaughton as Corrie.
The dates, times and locations of
the presentations are as follows:

the community in their plans?
McGrath and FWIO Public
Relations Officer Mary Janes are
encouraging members to think
about themselves and their health
while they recruit new members.
Members are asked to walk to
deliver their invitations, recording
the distance they go each day. At
the end of the month, all distances
will be tabulated and reported in
the Fall issue of their newsletter.
The challenge is twofold — how
many times around the equator will
13,000 members walk and how
many people will accept their
invitation to a meeting?

Leah read a touching card of
thanks from Jane DeVries.
Guests, Adrian and Toni Vos
brought three different types of
young birds, a Congo-African grey
parrot, a cockatiel and a conure. He
spoke of caring for the birds as
Toni handled the birds. They
explained that as the birds grew
they would become more colourful.
The next Dining Out program is
April 9. The theme is Easter. Guest
will be Jim Rose. There will also be
an Easter Bonnet Parade and
Contest. Prizes will be for the
prettiest, funniest and most original
so bring your creation and wear it
