Comic veteran returns to Blyth
Canadian comic veteran Dave
Broadfoot returns to the Blyth stage
Saturday, April 18 at 8 p.m. after a
lengthy absence and this time he's
Old Enough to Say What I Want.
That's the name of Broadfoot's
funny new one-man show which
replaces his touring Comedy
Crusade with more up-to-date
material. His comedy specialty is
contemporary satire and one
reviewer summed up his shows as
"a mix of political satire,
observational humour and general
comic genius."
Broadfoot made his television
debut in the variety show The Big
Revue and appeared as a featured
comedian and writer in the annual
satirical stage revue Spring Thaw.
He was introduced to the
American audience in 1955, as a
guest on the Ed Sullivan Show.
In 1973, he began his role as a
star of the remarkably successful
They're back in rehearsal at Blyth
and May 1 and 2 they'll be Waiting
for G. Doe.
'They' are the same zany troupe
who thrilled local audiences with
Come Back to the Gym MaryLou,
MaryLou and last year's
matrimonial hit, Gail and Brad's
Marvelous Wedding Adventure.
This time the setting is a surprise
party where more than the balloons
are full of hot air.
Staged as a Blyth Festival
fundraiser, Waiting for G. Doe
carries on a tradition of highly
successful dinner theatre events on
the Blyth stage. Written by Rob
On Tuesday, March 17, the
Brussels #1 4-H club met for their
first and second meeting of a new
topic which is called Explore 4-H.
In this club they learn about other
4-H topics.
The meeting began with the
pledge led by leader Julia Mitchell.
Members are: Vincent Bauer,
Emily Cardiff, Michelle De Wit,
Rachel Garland, Ashley Keffer,
Doug Mitchell, Ann Reilly, and
youth leader Christina De Wit.
Each person had a club name
pinned on the back of their shirt
and members were to guess which
kind of club it was with only four
clues.
Next they talked and reviewed
the motto and pledge as there was a
new member joining. Someone had
drawn a 4-H clover and members
had a draw to see who would get to
put it in their book. The winner was
Ann. Each is to make one and put it
in their books.
Before they went to talk about
this club, they did some work
together. They divided into groups
of four, then made a house out of
marshmallows and toothpicks.
The officers are president, Ann
Reilly; vice-president, Ashley
radio show, The Royal Canadian
Air Farce, which went on to win
many awards as the best written
and performed variety show in both
radio and television. After 15 years
with The Farce, he left amicably to
pursue other projects.
In 1981, he performed at the
National Arts Centre in Ottawa
before President Reagan and in
1982 returned there to appear
before Her Majesty Queen
Elizabeth. In June of that year, he
became the first professional
comedian to appear at the Canadian
Embassy in Washington.
Broadfoot has created many
original Canadian comic characters
such as hockey player Bobby
Clobber, mountie Sergeant
Renfrew, and a politician known as
"The Member for Kicking Horse
Pass", and he also portrays real
people like Bill Clinton, Preston
Manning and Jean Chretien.
Bundy and directed by Duncan
McGregor, Waiting for G. Doe will
feature the outstanding talents of
such Blyth favourites as Anne
Elliott, Floyd Herman, Kathleen
Babcock and Gary Haist, with
musical arrangements by the
melodious Arlene Darnbrough.
There'll be streamers and spiked
punch, dancing and door crashing,
as the mysterious G. Doe throws
himself a surprise party. The guest
list includes the forever fighting
Bill and Bev Stormington, the debt-
ridden Joey Punter, Pierre Puce the
party animal, and social climbers
Danny and Denise Pigeon.
Keifer; secretary, Vincent Bauer
and press reporter, Michelle De
Wit.
The second meeting was on
communications. They first went
around telling each other the
answer of roll call, then went on to
filling in the answers about five
senses.
On Thursday, March 19, the club
met for the third meeting at Julia
Mitchells'. The meeting was about
sewing and cooking.
They split into two groups, one
was to make shake-em-up pudding
and the other group was to make
meat loaf in a mug.
They were to sew a hem stitch by
hand and sew on a button.

After more than 40 years of
writing and performing his own
special brand of humour and
winning many awards, this Officer
in the Order of Canada has no plans
for retirement, especially now that
he is "old enough to say what he
wants".
If you're old enough to hear it,
order your tickets now by calling
the Blyth Festival Box office at
(519) 523-9300. Tickets are also
available at Carol's Candies, Blyth;
Campbell's, Goderich; Crossroads,
Clinton; and Bluewater Office
Equipment, Wingham.
Tickets are $25 and the last time
Broadfoot was in Blyth, the local
paper wrote: "If a laugh a minute is
the measure of a good comic act,
the audience got more than its
money's worth."
CFPL Radio 98 is the media
sponsor for this Festival
fundraising event.
Socialization specialist Mary
Marples hosts the party with very
little help from Tony, the hired
waiter.
Following dinner at 6 p.m., party
guests will start Waiting for G. Doe
at 8 p.m. at Blyth's Memorial Hall.
Tickets for both the dinner and
show are priced at $25 per person,
with show only tickets available for
$15. Reserve a seat at the surprise
party of the year by calling the
Blyth Festival Box Office at 519-
523-9300.
Will the surprise party be a
success? You won't know until
you're Waiting for G. Doe!.
After most people were finished
they taste tested the recipes.
Once again they were split into
groups and each group got a slip of
paper that had a different language
or Morse code on it. They were to
try saying or doing them. The guest
was unable to come and teach sign
language but she might be able to
come another time.
