From the Minister's Study April Fool's jokes a reminder, says minister Rev. Lynn Nichol Knox Cranbrook One of the best April Fool's Day jokes I've ever seen was played on an entire nation. A major newspaper ran a front-page story in its morning edition. It described a discovery by paleontologists of the fossil remains of a small, four- legged mammal, never before seen. They called the animal a "Lirpa Loot-. The story was very well-written. It was scientifically plausible, with all sorts of details that were so fascinating that other papers, and a television news show, picked up the story. Of course, when the newspaper revealed that "Lirpa Loof' was just "April Fool" spelled backwards, there were a lot of red faces. I'm not really sure what the purpose of these tricks is. Maybe we play the jokes to make us feel clever — making someone else look silly so that we look good. I hope that's not the whole reason. Maybe it's just for some enjoyment. But I think that one of the best things that comes out of April Fool's jokes is that we are reminded, if only for a moment, that we're not so wise that we can't sometimes be fooled. It was humbling for those of the scientific community who fell into the "Lirpa Loof' trap, when they realized what was going on. It's humbling to suddenly find your shoelaces tied together and to fall on your face in front of everyone. It's humbling to take a drink of your coffee and have to spit it out because it's so salty. I think maybe this is the redeeming factor of these jokes — they remind us that we're not invincible. April Fool's Day isn't a Christian holiday, but as usual, God can bring some good out of anything. We fall pfey to a prankster, and we feel foolish and humbled. Maybe we realize that we're not so wise. Maybe, if we start thinking about deeper things than April Fool's jokes, we realize that God is the only one who is truly wise. As Paul writes in the first letter to the Corinthians, "For God's foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God's weakness is stronger than human strength." (1 Cor. 1:25) And so we depend on God's wisdom. When an April Fool's joke, or life in general, brings us to our knees, we trust in God's wisdom and strength to lead us easter seat society through. We remember that the greatest thing God ever did for us, when Christ died for our sins and was raised again to life for our hope, has always seemed to some people like a huge April Food. But that one wasn't a joke. Easter is coming soon, and on that day Christian churches celebrate that Jesus is alive again, after having died. We come together, a group of ordinary people, some wise. and some not- so-wise, some strong and some not- so-strong, to celebrate all that Christ means in our lives. If you are looking for something you can count on, that won't turn out to be a joke, we invite you to join us at the church of your choice.
