PAGE 16. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1, 1998.
Communication first step to keeping kids safe
Keeping in touch today has never
been easier. With the click of a
mouse we can send or receive
messages from family and friends.
Chat lines enable communication
with people in many different
countries. Suddenly, because of
cyberspace, the world has become
much bigger.
As parents, however, communi-
cating with children is not quite as
simple as a click of a mouse. Being
a good communicator in the real
world is not an easy task and
requires a life time of learning.
Talking and listening is equally as
important.
People are rarely taught how to
listen so it is one of the biggest
challenges in many relationships.
Good communication is letting
someone know that you care by
listening to them.
Children need to know that even
though they may be young, their
opinion matters and that if they
have a problem, they must have
trust and understanding,
particularly from family members.
Children who are encouraged to
share their feelings are much less
likely to become victims of abuse
and bullying; and are much more
likely to grow up with high self-
esteem.
Stay Alert ... Stay Safe (SASS)
— a registered Canadian charity
which has been working to keep
children safe since 1987 — reminds
everyone that this April marks the
8th annual Stay Alert ... Stay Safe
month in Canada. This year's SASS
month theme is "Talk it Over".
SASS believes that parents can
help keep the lines of
communication open by
remembering and observing these
simple suggestions:
• Speak openly with your child.
Build good communication skills
from day one. As they get older,
set aside time each day to ask
them what was good or bad about
their day. This helps establish
lifelong communication habits
early.
• Practice being a good listener.
• Have regular, family meetings to
keep communication channels
open and allow all family
members to share their feelings,
thoughts and opinions.
• Establish an information centre
in your house where you and your
kids leave messages. Ideally, this
centre should be near the phone.
• Encourage them to always share
a problem with a friend or grown-
up they trust.
For practical suggestions on how
to help keep your child safe, SASS
suggests accessing their web site at
