The Belgrave team came home with the championship. Another hockey season has come to an end and for the Novice Houseleague team it is with the WOAA championship title. With a great season behind them they started their playoffs with a round robin series against Monkton and Clinton. The Brussels team won three games and tied one to advance themselves into the A championship series against Zurich. Game one was slated to go, in front of a strong home crowd on March 19. Two evenly-matched teams fought it out for three tough periods of hockey. The Brussels team jumped out to a 2-0 lead only to see Zurich come back and_tie the game by the end of regulation time. Blyth Tykes, B champs The Blyth Tykes competed in a year-end tournament, held in Brus- sels, March 27 and 28, to determine the WOAA local league, south division, consolation champions. Tony Bean earned a hattrick while goalie Anthony Peters got the shutout. Brett Courtney captured an assist on Bean's first netter. On a roll, the Tykes were pre- pared for Elma-Logan as they bat- tled for the B title. The overpowering accuracy of Bean's shot blasted six of Blyth's seven goals over the line. Johnathon McDowell popped in the team's third netter. Assists went to Lee Watkins, Ken Plunkett (two) and Roman Sturzenegger (two). The final tally was 7-3 as Blyth brought home the B championship. Seaforth, Goderich and Blyth were awarded medallions from WOAA to signify their placement at the end of the season. The Belgrave Junior Girls ended a great season in victory as they captured the championship in tour- nament play, March 27 to 29. The Friday contest matched them against Kincardine. Two early period goals by Nicole Proctor and Rachel Elliott were enough only for a tie as Kincardine fought back with the tying score at 1:02 of the third. Assists went to Proctor, Elliott and Michelle Cook. The MVP award went to Sarah McDonald. "This was an eye-opener for the team," said Coach Steve Cook. "We thought we had the game won, however, a determined Kincardine team fought back to earn the tie." The second and third games went more smoothly for the squad as they finished both with a five-goal margin. Taking on Port Elgin, Belgrave struck early and often, putting four This put the game into a sudden death overtime period. Brussels didn't waste any time as they took advantage of their first scoring chance and won the game 40 seconds into the period. The second game was back in Zurich on March 24. It turned out to be almost identical to the first match. Two equally matched teams skated hard for three periods only to see the score deadlocked at the end of regulation time. Cook brought the score even when she stuffed a shot between the pads of the goalie of a pass from Camerra Yuill. Before the second period ended, Ruttan set up Cook for a low shot to the blocker side to put Belgrave ahead. Holding off their attackers, the squad captured the WOAA Junior Girls championship. It was particularly rewarding as the final was the third game of the day and they had eliminated the two top teams in league standings, said Coach Cook. "For her leadership/throughout the game, Cook was awarded the MVP title though hats go off to all the girls as they all gave it their best."
