Belgrave Jr. Girls capture WOAA championship
Well done
Michelle Cook was
recognized as the MVP at the
WOAA Junior Girls playoffs
this past weekend. The
Belgrave team came home
with the championship.
Another hockey season has come
to an end and for the Novice
Houseleague team it is with the
WOAA championship title.
With a great season behind them
they started their playoffs with a
round robin series against Monkton
and Clinton. The Brussels team
won three games and tied one to
advance themselves into the A
championship series against Zurich.
Game one was slated to go, in
front of a strong home crowd on
March 19. Two evenly-matched
teams fought it out for three tough
periods of hockey. The Brussels
team jumped out to a 2-0 lead only
to see Zurich come back and_tie the
game by the end of regulation time.
Blyth Tykes,
B champs
The Blyth Tykes competed in a
year-end tournament, held in Brus-
sels, March 27 and 28, to determine
the WOAA local league, south
division, consolation champions.
Off to a slow start, Friday, Blyth
was downed 4-0 by Milverton.
Saturday dawned better as they
clipped Clinton 3-0 in their second
game.
Tony Bean earned a hattrick
while goalie Anthony Peters got the
shutout.
Brett Courtney captured an assist
on Bean's first netter.
On a roll, the Tykes were pre-
pared for Elma-Logan as they bat-
tled for the B title.
The overpowering accuracy of
Bean's shot blasted six of Blyth's
seven goals over the line.
Johnathon McDowell popped in
the team's third netter.
Assists went to Lee Watkins,
Ken Plunkett (two) and Roman
Sturzenegger (two).
The final tally was 7-3 as Blyth
brought home the B championship.
Teams from Brussels, Blyth,
Seaforth, Milverton, Zurich,
Clinton, Goderich, Bayfield,
Hensall and Elma-Logan played off
in the tournament.
The team from Seaforth went
home champions at the end of the
tournament with a 5 - 2 victory
over Goderich.
Seaforth, Goderich and Blyth
were awarded medallions from
WOAA to signify their placement
at the end of the season.
The Belgrave Junior Girls ended
a great season in victory as they
captured the championship in tour-
nament play, March 27 to 29.
The Friday contest matched them
against Kincardine.
Two early period goals by Nicole
Proctor and Rachel Elliott were
enough only for a tie as Kincardine
fought back with the tying score at
1:02 of the third.
Assists went to Proctor, Elliott
and Michelle Cook.
The MVP award went to Sarah
McDonald.
"This was an eye-opener for the
team," said Coach Steve Cook.
"We thought we had the game won,
however, a determined Kincardine
team fought back to earn the tie."
The second and third games went
more smoothly for the squad as
they finished both with a five-goal
margin.
Taking on Port Elgin, Belgrave
struck early and often, putting four
This put the game into a sudden
death overtime period. Brussels
didn't waste any time as they took
advantage of their first scoring
chance and won the game 40
seconds into the period.
It was a great team effort with
lots of good passing, great defence
and some terrific goaltending.
Scoring the goals for Brussels were
Jordan Campbell, Christopher Jutzi
and Justin Mayne.
The second game was back in
Zurich on March 24. It turned out
to be almost identical to the first
match. Two equally matched teams
skated hard for three periods only
to see the score deadlocked at the
end of regulation time. The
Brussels team had jumped out to a
2-0 lead only to see a determined
Zurich team claw themselves even.
The North American short track
speed skating championships
brought more accolades to the two
Hunt women of Ethel.
Held in St. John, NB, March 27-
29, Kathy Hunt captured the overall
Masters title for the fourth year.
"I was very happy with the
results, especially since I took the
first part of the season off," she
said.
goals across the line before their
opponent scored.
Strong play between the pipes by
Candace McLellan thwarted Port
Elgin's numerous chances.
Goals were scored by Lindsay
Hoff, Elliott and Cook (four).
Assists were earned by Cook,
Nikki Walker and Alyssa Ruttan.
Cook was named MVP.
"The girls were fired up for this
game as they dominated their oppo-
nent. The team jelled, coming
together for a great effort," said
Cook.
The final score was 6-1.
With the same score, Belgrave
defeated Walkerton, in their third
game.
The combination of McLellan's
strong net play, and the five goals
by Cook, Belgrave knocked off the
number one team from regular sea-
son play.
Proctor also netted the puck
while Elliott and Laurin Hoegy gar-
Overtime Again! After four
exciting minutes of end-to-end
hockey the Brussels team finally
scored to win the game and the
championship.
Scoring the goals for Brussels
were Steven Ropp, Mayne and
Jutzi. Providing some great passes
were Campbell, Alyssa Cowing,
Mathew Souch and Jamie
Cochrane.
Great defence by Scott Phillips,
Evan Wilkinson, Doug Schnock,
Jake van Beek and some excellent
goaltending by Andrew McDonald
kept Zurich at bay.
Congratulations to all the kids for
a successful and fun season of
hockey. The team would like to
take this time to thank everyone
who helped them this season and a
big thank you to their loyal fans.
Hunt skated a Canadian record in
the 1,000-metre, taking more than
two seconds off her previous best
to mark a 1.48.90.
She also skated season personal
bests in the 1,500-metre at 2.53.10,
and the 500-metre at 51.96.

nered assists.
McLellan's standout performance
earned her MVP honours.
In the championship match, the
girls took to the ice against Wing-
ham.
The squad dug deep and showed
a lot of heart in battling back from
a 2-0 deficit, said Coach Cook.
Elliott started the comeback on a
nice wrist shot from the blueline on
a pass from Hoegy.
Cook brought the score even
when she stuffed a shot between
the pads of the goalie of a pass
from Camerra Yuill.
Before the second period ended,
Ruttan set up Cook for a low shot
to the blocker side to put Belgrave
ahead.
Holding off their attackers, the
squad captured the WOAA Junior
Girls championship.
It was particularly rewarding as
the final was the third game of the
day and they had eliminated the
two top teams in league standings,
said Coach Cook.
"For her leadership/throughout
the game, Cook was awarded the
MVP title though hats go off to all
the girls as they all gave it their
best."
The team enjoyed a ride through
Brussels on the fire truck and pizza
at JR's, donated by Cam and Lori
Proctor.
