Midget Bulldogs
keep on winning
The Blyth Midget Bulldogs took
a commanding 2-0 lead in their
OMHA championship final series
against Beaver Valley this past
weekend. Blyth took the opening
game in Thornbury 4-2 on Friday
night, then dominated game two in
Blyth on Sunday afternoon, blitzing
their visitors 10-2.
After an impressive opening
cereriony Friday night in
Thorn! my the two teams settled in
to a fast-paced game featuring end-
to-end action with very few
penalties.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring
early in the contest as defencemen
Jamie Black and Cory Bragg set up
Mike Courtney, who fooled the
Beaver Valley puckstopper with a
low shot from just inside the
blueline.
Beaver Valley tied the game with
8:35 left in. the first but four
minutes later Mike Haggitt
regained the lead for Blyth as he
whistled home the puck, top shelf
from close range Black and Steve
Oldfield earned the assists on this
go-ahead goal.
One minute later Kyle Anderson
increased the lead to 3-1 as he
shovelled in the puck after a wild
goalmouth scramble. Darrell
Gerrits and Haggitt garnered the
assists as Haggitt initiated the goal
with a rink-length dash.
Beaver Valley closed the gap to
3-2 with only 35 seconds left in the
first frame as they capitalized with
a rare powerplay goal.
Blyth notched the only goal in a
solid second period of hockey.
With just over two minutes
remaining in the period Chris
Carter gave the Bulldogs some
breathing room as he upped the
lead to 4-2. Carter was creating
havoc in front of the Beaver Valley
goal when he tipped in Mike
Ansley's blueline bomb.
The teams played a scoreless
third as Scott Bromley, in the
Bulldogs' net, turned away many
Beaver Valley scoring chances,
although team defence kept the
good scoring chances to a
minimum.
This victory gave Blyth a 1-0
final series lead as they hosted
game two on Sunday afternoon.
The Bulldogs were firing on all
cylinders as they humbled Beaver
Valley 10-2.
Team passing was as good as it's
been in quite some time as the
Bulldogs excelled in all facets of
the game. Linda Kirby did a
wonderful job of singing 0 Canada
during the opening ceremonies
which inspired the boys right from
the opening faceoff.
The Bulldogs scored three and a
half minutes into the game and
dominated in all areas throughout.
Jeff Cowan and Haggitt led the
offensive assault with three goals
each with Haggitt also adding three
assists. Oldfield also had a big
game as he notched two goals and
added an assist. Gerrits and Black
rounded out the game scoring.
The defence pairing of Black and
Bragg each dished out four assists
as they made accurate outlet passes
all game long. Additional game
assists were recorded by Mike
Courtney; with two, Anderson,
Darryl Bromley and Ansley.
This win gives the Bulldogs a
commanding 2-0 series lead with
the third game in Thornbury on
Friday, March 27 at 7 p.m. Game
four, if necessary, will be hosted by
Blyth on Saturday, March 28 at 3
p.m. The Midgets arc poised to
claim the OMHA All-Ontario
Championship but still realize an
honest effort will be needed.
Coach McDougall summed up
the feelings of team management
when he stated, "The Bulldogs are
the better team, but they must
realize that they still must execute
on the ice to prove it. These young
men have played a long time to get
this far and I'm sure that they won't
let this chance slip away."
FROM THE DOG POUND:

time, Dave Ansley won a face-off
deep in Woodville's zone, made a
nifty move, skated in alone and
beat the goalie to give Blyth a 3-2
lead.
Dean Wilson had a great game in
the Blyth net, making many key
saves to keep Blyth in the game.
Game two returned to Blyth
Sunday afternoon. Both teams
showed more jump than the first
game, creating more scoring
chances. Blyth hit first with Ansley
scoring eight minutes into the game
on a pass from Matt Anderson.
Woodville tied the game a minute
later, but Arthur restored the lead
on passes from Tyler Stewart and
Craig Marks.
Again Woodville tied the game
early in the second period. With
four minutes remaining in the
second frame, Stewart took a pass
from Nathan Shannon at centre ice
and skating in, beat the Woodville
goaltender to put Blyth up again.
Blyth started the third period
with a powerplay and needed only
22 seconds to go ahead 4-2. Derek
Cook outskated the Woodville
defencemen to the puck and sent a
perfect pas, to M. Anderson who
made no mistake burying the shot.
Blyth's defensive game held up to
clinch the victory.
Wilson was again superb in the
Blyth net.
Blyth can win the series next
Sunday at home at 4 p.m. Come on
out and cheer the boys on.
