PAGE 9. Rev. talks of God's nuturing The Afternoon Unit of the UCW met Tuesday, March 10 in the Sunday School room. Kay Roberts welcomed every- one, then read a poem entitled "Candle in the Night". Lois Chamney conducted the worship, opening with a call to worship followed by prayer and the singing of a hymn. Mary Hunter read the scripture. It was another winning weekend for the Hunt family of Ethel as they speed skated their way through the provincial trials in Hespeler. Capturing a bronze in the Junior Girls (14 to 15 year-olds) competi- tion, Carla qualified for the Canadi- an championships in Quebec, April 3-5. In the process of achieving three personal best times, Carla compet- ed in a nail-biting 500-metre final, said mom, Kathy. They had three restarts after a skater fell and was injured in the first two attempts, she said. With just three skaters left, Carla's sec- ond place finish was very important for her qualifying for the nationals. Carla skated 51.67, down from 52.52 in the 500-metre; 1.23.78, from 1.25.01 in the 777-metre and 2.53.60, from 2.56.07 in the 1,000- metre. Cayli earned a silver in the Pee- Wee Girls (six and seven) division, also flying to three personal bests. She hit 35.94 in the 222-metre, down from 38.68; 50.97 in the 333- metre, from 54.00 and 1.17.93 in the 500-metre, from 1.20.99. Mrs. Chamney then presented the meditation entitled "Growing Old Gracefully". Edith Vincent con- cluded the worship by reading a poem entitled "The Train of Life". Jean Pattison continued the study of the book of Matthew. It was entitled "Transformation Power of Christ." Mrs. Vincent was in charge of the study which dealt with anti- racism. Kathy took the gold in the Senior A Women's class and will attend the North American championships in St. John, NB, March 28-30, along with Carla, to defend her Master's title for the third year. Though Brett and Bryce did not bring home medals, both skated solid performances, said Kathy. Winners of the ladies' February Mary Taylor greeted worshippers at Knox United Church on Sunday, March 15, the third Sunday of Lent. Rev. Mary Jane Hobden welcomed everyone. Great Is Thy Faithfulness and Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness were song time hymns. Alice Yuill and Shawn Cottrill were in charge of nursery. The junior mixed choir sang Kids Under Construction and No Matter How Tight a Spot You're In accompanied by Joanne Robinson at the piano and Lila Procter directing. For children's story time Rev. Hobden showed the children a bulb and asked them if it was dead or alive. They replied that if it was green it was alive and if it was looked after and watered it would grow and bloom. Brett placed sixth out of 17 in the Bantam class (eight and nine) while Juvenile skater Bryce (12 and 13) was very pleased with his skate in the 1,000-metre after having taken two years off from the sport. The end of the year banquet and award night is March 20 at 6:30 p.m. All members and spouses arc welcome. "God doesn't give up on us if we do bad things. God carefully tends and nurtures us, just like the gardener, hoping that we will bear fruit. God feeds and cares for us and invites us to 'bear fruit' by loving and caring for others. God always gives us a second chance," she said. The children adjourned for Sunday School. The Old Testament reading was from Isaiah 55: 1-9, Psalm selection was 63: 1-8 and the gospel reading was from Luke 13: Ross and Barbara Anderson recently returned from an enjoyable trip to the Caribbean Island of Grenada where the sun shone every day with warm temperatures. There were 11 tables of shoot in play at the Belgrave Community Centre on Friday, March 13. Prizes were: high lady, Audrey Edgar; second high lady, Donna Shaw; most shoots, Lois Chamney; low lady, Louise Bosman; high man, George Inglis; second high man, Jane Grasby; most shoots, Garner Nicholson; low man, Jim Hunter. 1-9. In the Bulb and 0 Jesus I Have Promised were sung by the congregation. The sermon was based on "Destruction and Doing the Same as 2,000 years ago". Cathy and Jim McCracken took up the offering followed by the offertory song All That I Am. Lunch and fellowship followed in the Sunday School room. Knox Stewards will be holding the annual pancake supper on Wednesday, April 1 at Knox United Church. Lindsay; Kim Higgins, Laura, Ashley and Jarrod. Their topic was children and pain. Glyn and Margaret Wide of Hamilton spent last weekend with Gamer and Alice Nicholson. Jim and Irene Lamont of Belgrave, Dale and Colleen Lamont of London along with some neighbours in the community were guests at tne nome or Amy McCrea in Blyth Saturday, March 7 to help celebrate the occasion of Winnie Vincent's 95th birthday. They also visited there on March 10. Happy birthday Winnie from all your friends and neighbours. Jim Cook and Jonathan of Owen Sound spent the weekend with Jean Cook.
