Blyth Midgets Bulldogs
set to open OMHA finals
Atter recently disposing of the
Walpole Island Hawks, the Blyth
Midget Bulldogs are set to open
their Ontario Minor Hockey
Association All-Ontario final series
against Beaver Valley.
Beaver Valley and Sunderland
completed their semi-final series
last weekend as the series went to
an extra game with Beaver Valley
edging Sunderland three games to
two with one game tied.
Blyth enters the series relatively
healthy with the exception of
power forward Corey Campbell
whose season ended prematurely
because of injuries received in a
recent auto accident. The Bulldogs
have three solid lines which have
all been contributing offensively
throughout the season.
Team management agrees that
team defense will be key to
winning the series and that includes
all five skaters on the ice. The
The Blyth Novice Bulldogs are
hot! As the season draws to an
interesting close, the Novice team
has advanced to the WOAA Group
'B' finals by putting out Bayfield in
a best three out of five series
winning it 3-1.
During the season, the players
have learned the fundamentals of
the game as well as team work,
putting their skills to use on the ice.
Although the scoreboard has not
been their friend during the
majority of the season, the most
important factor, as far as the
coaching staff has been concerned,
has been to see the players "gel"
into a well-working unit both
offensively and defensively.
People say 'it does not matter if
you win or lose, but it's more
important how you play the game'
and these players have championed
this statement!
The season began with the
returning players, Josh Albrechtas
(defence), Darcey Cook (centre),
Jeff Elliott (goalie), One Falconer
(right wing), Kyle Nixon (right
wing) and Jenna Rinn (left wing)
who formed the core to build
around.
The team welcomed the Belgrave
connection of Krys Campbell
(centre), Brandon Kellington and
Trevor McArter (both defence), as
well as Blyth-ites, Blake
Hesselwood (defence), Kendall
Whitfield (centre), Heather
Schmidt, Richard 'Dickey' Gregg,
Devin Jenkins and Joel Salverda
who all rounded off the offensive
unit, with Joel playing double duty
as backup netminder.
On Sunday, March 15, the team
travelled to Bayfield looking for
their third win. They were not
disappointed as they returned home
having won the game. The arena
was alive with cheers from the
parents as Blyth scored first with a
concentrated effort from Cook and
Whitfield against the Bayfield
powerplay in the first period.
Bulldog defence, consisting of
Cory Bragg, Darryl Postma, Jamie
Black and Mike Ansley, must
continue their solid play in their
own zone and give goalkeeper
Scott Bromley a clear view of the
shots.
The team is ready for game
action after some productive
practices lately. Scouting reports
have Beaver Valley as a speedy,
disciplined team who come to play
every night.
First game of the series will be
played in Thornbury on Friday,
March 20 at 7 p.m. Blyth hosts
game two on Suaday, March 22, an
afternoon contest with the time yet
to be confirmed.
Beaver Valley won the flip for
the extra game and will host game
three on Friday, March 27, while
Blyth will host game four, if
necessary, on Saturday, March 28.
Game times in Blyth have yet to
be confirmed, so stay tuned.
Each line continued their
offensive attack which tallied two
additional goals, one from Cook,
assisted by Jenkins at 9:51 and
Albrechtas, from Salverda at 8:09
of the second period.
At this point, Blyth was ahead 3-
0 with the talent of Elliott's quick
reflexes and the solid defensive
efforts of his teammates.
At 4:13 of the second period,
Bayfield's Jeremy Welsh, had
control of the puck and broke
through Blyth's defense, shot on
Elliott who stopped the puck but
lost the rebound due to Welsh's
momentum toward the net.
The two teams continued to
battle back and forth adding up two
goals each, to end the game 5-3 for
Blyth. The first of Blyth's last two
goals were scored by Cook,
assisted by Gregg and Hesselwood.
The last goal went to Albrechtas
from McArter to cement the
victory.
With a couple of well deserved
days off, the Bulldogs will be
playing their final series against
Mount Forest. Hats go off to these
players who have put their heart
and soul into becoming the best
they can be!
The Blyth Bantam hockey club
has made it to the Bantam E
OMHA final.
Blyth earned a berth in the final
by sweeping Walpole Island in
three games.
The Bantam Bulldogs travelled
to Walpole Island Thursday, March
12 to open the series. A two-week
layoff showed as Blyth fell behind
3-0 in the first period. However,
Blyth battled back to even the score
at four by the end of the second
frame.
The game remained deadlocked
until Matt Anderson slid in the
winner with four seconds left in
regulation time.
Other Blyth goal-getters were
Adam Anderson, Craig Marks,
Dave Ansley and Derek Cook.
Assists went to Tyler Stewart,
Cook, Bryce Toll, M. Anderson
and Ansley with two.
Dean Wilson provided steady
goaltending in a game that featured
only one penalty call.
Blyth hosted game two Saturday,
March 14. Walpole approached this
game with a different attitude,
receiving 51 penalty minutes. The
Bulldogs, however, stuck to their
disciplined style and outscored
Walpole 10-3 for their second win.
