E ntertainment HEROES prevents injuries
Kicking up their heels
Bronwen Hazelwood, left, Sky Westman and Erin Baker, all of St. Marys District Collegiate
and Vocational Institute, took -the opportunity offered them through the Sears Drama
Festival held in Blyth, to learn a few new dance steps.
`Magic School Bus' drives on to Centre stage
Wahoo! Scholastic's The Magic
School Bus — Live! roars into
Kitchener's The Centre In The
Square with the live theatrical
production of Arnold's Favourite
Field Trip, an original musical
production based on The Magic
School Bus award-winning PBS
television series produced by
Scholastic Productions and best-
selling books by Joanna Cole and
Bruce Degen, published by
Scholastic Inc.
The original musical is produced
and marketed by the Brad Simon
Organization, Inc. and Strawberry
Productions, Inc. through their joint
venture, Bus Adventures.
Come meet Ms Frizzle, Arnold,
Carlos, Dorothy Ann, Keesha, Liz
and Wanda as Scholastic's The
Magic School Bus — Live! motors
into town.
With the original score by Peter
Luyre, composer of the rollicking
The Magic School Bus theme song
and a live cast, including teacher-
extraordinaire Ms Frizzle, her
reptilian sidekick, Liz, reluctant
Arnold, corny Carlos, bookish
Dorothy Anne, curious Keesha and
energetic Wanda — The Magic
School Bus comes alive in a 65-
minute stage performance packed
with music, learning, and fun,
complete with audience
participation.
What starts out as an ordinary
field trip to the dedication
ceremony of the Walkerville bridge
soon turns into an adventure in
Arnold's pantry.
As the Magic School Bus'
"puckerbrating retroflater" mal-
functions and Arnold accidentally
activates the "shrinkerscope" the
class is "shrunk" to the size of
popsicles, before the audience's
eyes! Trapped in Arnold's locked
pantry, the miniature class must use
what they have learned about
bridges to escape through the open
window (directly above a now-
huge banana cream pie) and return
to normal size.
This is one day Arnold wishes he
hadn't stayed home! Tickets are
$18.50, $15.50 and $12.50.
Students in Huron will get a
chance to experience something
they will never forget: HEROES —
North America's largest travelling
injury prevention show. Unlike any
other presentation, HEROES puts
safety into a fun context through
upbeat messages that focus on
every student's desire to be in
control. HEROES will be
performed: March 6 at 9 a.m.,
10:30 a.m., 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. at
Central Huron High School,
Clinton.
The show is a fast paced blend of
rock and roll, computer controlled
slides, and hard hitting stories told
by injury survivors. During the one
hour performance, students get a
chance to learn that 'life is about
taking risks', which means
choosing to act on five simple steps
emphasized during the show. They
are: buckle up, drive sober, look
first, wear the gear, get trained.
HEROES consist of 6,000
pounds of equipment to transform
high school gymnasiums into high
tech audio-visual theatres. Using a
quadraphonic sound system, a bank
of computer controlled slides cued
to display shots of youth, and live
presenters, HEROES is a one-of-a-
kind show that students love.
In the four years the show has
travelled from coast to coast,
HEROES has been seen by
600,000 viewers. The presentation
takes one full day to set up and
several local area students are
volunteering as members of the
staging crew. As well, local area
students will take an active role in
presenting HEROES.
Injuries number one killer
of teenagers
HEROES is produced by
SMARTRISK Foundation, a non-
profit organization dedicated to
reducing the number of injuries in
Canada. The foundation is creating
a social movement in Canada to
encourage people to re-think their
risk-taking behaviour. In fact,
injuries are the number one killer of
teenagers in Canada. Of ever 10
teens who die each year, seven die
because of injuries. Ninety per cent
of these injuries are predictable and
preventable.
"Our goal is to make smart-risk
taking and injury prevention the
next great social movement in
Canada," said Dr. Robert Conn,
executive director of the
foundation. "Just as the green
movement changed our approach to
the environment, we want
Canadians to realize that managing
life's risks is a process worth
considering.
Financial support for HEROES is
provided by "Founding HEROES":
Royal Insurance, General Motors
of Canada, Bell, Canadian Pacific,
and Canadian Red Cross. HEROES
states that: "You're a hero if you
put your life on the line to save a
life — any life, even your own."
The HEROES presentation, fully
funded by the Bell Pioneers, was
organized by a steering committee
from Central Huron Secondary
School, St. Anne's Secondary
School and Huron County Health
Unit. Following the 12:30
presentation, Huron County Health
Unit staff member, Marguerite
Thomas, will be hosting the Huron
Perth Injury Prevention Committee
(HPIPC) meeting.
HPIPC was formed in 1994 to
bring together individuals and
agencies interested in injury
prevention. In addition to the
HEROES themes, HPIPC also
promotes farm safety and falls
prevention for seniors.
Anyone interested in being a
member of HPIPC is encouraged to
contact Thomas at 482-3416 or 1-
800-265-5184.
Approximately 1,600 students
will take part in HEROES 111111
including groups organized by
OSAID from other Huron and
Perth Secondary schools and
Clinton area Grades 7/8 students as
well as the host schools. Interested
adults can contact Thomas to book
a space.
