THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 1998. Blyth Bulldogs boost bucks with benefit The Blyth Midget Bulldogs' biggest fundraiser for the Montreal 'Canadian Cup' tournament trip in early April is set to go this Saturday, Feb. 28 at 8:30 p.m. at the Blyth and District Community Centre. Their 'Bonjour Montreal' benefit hockey game is set to face off between the Blyth Old Stars and the Bulldogs' Minor Hockey coaches. Already a war of words is developing which could turn this shinny showdown into a bitter ice battle. Although neither team divulge their final lineup or any game strategy for fear of giving an edge to their opponent, this much is certain: the fireworks should erupt as soon as the first puck is dropped. The Bulldog coaches will be led by the Grecian Formula line of Don 'Barney' Stewart, Gary 'PeeWec' Courtney and Wayne 'Fossil' McDougall, whose coaching career pre-dates the present day arena. Steve Howson, who is leading the Old Stars into battle, admits that they are up against a formidable foe. "Just ask them. They'll tell you what great players they are. Most of them are legends in their own minds!" When asked to comment on the Old Stars line-up, Coach McDougall wondered aloud, "I have no idea what their roster will look like, but with a name like Old Stars, chances are they will be old and chances are they will see stars as we skate by them." The Blyth Midget Bulldogs finally saw playoff action as they opened their OMHA semi-final series in Walpole Island on Sunday, Feb. 22. When the final penalty had been called it was the Bulldogs who overpowered the Walpole Island Hawks 5-1. Corey Campbell opened the game scoring 26 seconds into the game as he pounced on a loose puck at the edge of the crease. Walpole island rebounded to tie the game just over one minute later but it was Blyth's game the rest of the way. Walpole played most of the game shorthanded and only a poorly executed Blyth powerplay kept the score respectable. Chris Carter and Steve Oldfield set up the eventual game winner midway through the first period as Cory Bragg pinched in from the point and found the open net. Bragg notched another power- play goal to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead with 1:27 remaining in the period with Oldfield and Darryl Bromley earning the assists. Blyth increased their lead to 5-1 with two unanswered second- period goals including another man-advantage marker. Darryl Postma and Mike Ansley set up Campbell's second goal of the game midway through the period to give the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead. Bragg notched his third point of the game with 4:39 left in the second as he set up Mike Haggitt's powerplay tally. That ended the game scoring but the fireworks continued until the final buzzer. Give the Bulldogs full Help protect the environment Reduce, reuse and recycle_ The action continues during the intermission as Burt Lobb will be auctioning an impressive array of autographed collectibles. Featured will be a Gordie Howe autographed Northlands hockey stick, Brendan Shanahan autographed Red Wings sweater, Mario Lemieux gift set, NHL Players Association apparel, team autographed London Knights game stick and a Mats Sundin autographed Leafs jersey. Bidders have been lining up for what should be the evening's highlight. The Midget Bulldogs will also be selling tickets on an assortment of memorabilia containing auto- graphed photos and pucks, [-shirts, hats, sticks, hockey cards, equipment, books, etc. donated by many teams and organizations including the Oilers, Devils, Canadiens, Blackhawks, WPHL, CHL, Rawlings, Bauer and the NHL PA, to name but a few. Door prizes of tickets to a Kitchener Rangers game, gift subscription to the Hockey Digest, as well as hockey sticks will be given away. All proceeds from the evening's entertainment goes toward the players' expenses for the upcoming tournament in Montreal on April 2 - 5. Coach Chamney added, "The team encourages the community to come out on Saturday night and watch the Bulldogs of the past help the Bulldogs of the present and possibly inspire the Bulldogs of the future. Game time is 8:30 p.m." marks for showing restraint and discipline as they watched their hosts wear a path to the penalty box, not to mention early showers. Coach McDougall commented on the series opening win, "the boys deserve credit for not retaliating to the many cheap shots they were subjected to. The referee did a good job and she deserves full marks for keeping the game under control." Coach Chamney added, "The Bulldogs. played with discipline and that looks like it will be the key to this series. It's not easy for the boys to take the shots without retaliating but it's necessary if they are to be successful." Game two of the best three out of five series will be played in Blyth this Sunday, March 1 at 3:30 p.m. Walpole Island hosts game three on Friday, March 6 with Blyth hosting game four, if necessary, on Sunday, March 8. Come out and support your Midget Bulldogs as they continue their playoff odyssey. Volleyballers advance F.E. Madill Secondary School junior and senior girls volleyball teams won a spot at Huron-Perth after the finals at Wingham, Tues- day, Feb. 17. Both teams faced Goderich Dis- trict Collegiate Institute for their first games. Each fought hard and won three sets to move on to the Huron-Perth deciding matches. The juniors played St. Anne's High School, Clinton, for their sec- ond and last game and won all three sets again. The first was 15-3; second, 15-5 and the third set, 15- 10. The senior girls met Central Huron Secondary School, Clinton, and were in for a major battle-. Both teams played very strong with Clinton winning the first set and Madill winning the second. With a win under each of their belts, and with tension mounting, CHSS struggled to hold on but lost the deciding match, 15-3. Madill's strong senior team played another hard match with Andrea Hiller, middle blocker, sending a couple of hard drives into the opposing team's court to gain a lead on CHSS. With a substitution of Lesley Elliott for Denise Kikkert, Madill with the serve, along with a great team effort brought the score to game point making it 14-5 for Madill. Madill lost the serve but quickly got it back to win the set 15-5. Both the senior and junior teams advance to Huron Perth on Thurs- day at Stratford Central High School.
