Fair
Assessment
System
Want to know more about your property assessment?
Over the past 12 months, all properties in Ontario were assessed on a fair, consistent and up-to-
date basis. The new Ontario Fair Assessment System requires that municipalities assist low-income
senior and disabled homeowners and allows them to phase in any tax changes over a period of up to
eight years. Your municipality will continue to be responsible for setting municipal property tax rates.
During February, more than 3.8 million Notices of Property Assessment were mailed to individual
property owners.
If you have questions about your assessment, you can get the answers you need by calling the
Assessment Information line at 1-800-827-1857, or by attending your local Community
Assessment Information Session. Knowledgeable staff will be available to answer your questions
and to explain how these new assessments are fair, consistent and up-to-date.
Check the list you received with your Notice of Property Assessment, call toll-free, or visit the
website for information about sessions in your area and about changes to Ontario's property
assessment system.

It was wet and windy outdoors
but warm and inviting inside the
WI Hall, Belgrave when 35 WI
members and friends met on
Tuesday, Feb. 17.
While the potluck buffet was
being prepared those in attendance
were invited to try to name the 20
unique items displayed on a table.
All items were antiques and many
were puzzling as to their purpose.
President Audrey Fenton
welcomed everyone and made
mention both of the Winter
Olympics in Japan and also of that
particular week being Heritage
Week.
With Mary Coultes at the piano,
O Canada was sung followed by
the Women's Institute Grace and a
bountiful lunch.
Ross Taylor announced the
identity of the mystery items which
ranged from valve lifters to cherry
pitters. Winners for most correct
answers were Mary Hunter and
George Inglis.
Ada Taylor was convenor of this
meeting as head of the Curators
Committee. She presented a
Canadian quiz and also a very
enlightening month-by-month
report on 1997. She touched on
topics of local interest as well as
national and international
happenings.
Alice Nicholson gave a reading
entitled "In Days of Yore".
A brief business meeting
followed. Two more potluck and
