The Blyth Atom Bulldogs
nabbed two wins in exhibition play
recently.
On Feb. 12, the team hosted
Clinton and came away with a 7-1
victory.
The visitors got on the board
early with a shot at the 9:14 mark
of the first, but that was all as the
home squad blasted away.
Scoring were Ryan McClinchey
with a hattrick, Tyler Kernighan
with two and Brett Bean and Cody
Anderson -with singles. Assists
went to Darren Austin, Kendall

Bantams
Brussels Bantams were edged by
Clinton in the first game of a best
of five WOAA playoff series.
In the first period, Clinton got on
the board first, but Brussels
responded shortly after with Chris
Blake setting up Ryan Mawhinney
for the goal.
In the second period, Brussels
left ahead when Mawhinney turned
around and set up the play for Marc
Fischer to sneak one between the
pipes. Clinton tied it a minute later.
After allowing the opponent to
take the lead in the third, Brussels
failed to get it back and handed
Clinton a hard-fought 3-2 victory.
Matt Elliott played well in net fdt-

The next game was Tuesday in
Clinton.
Beginners
win, lose
The Blyth Bulldogs notched a
win and a loss during the last two
weeks of hockey. Although
playing in the large Lucknow arena
should have been a challenge for
these wee Bulldogs, they met the
task head on and skated to a
victorious game ending in an 11-7
score.
The Bulldogs didn't fare as well
at their second game and were
defeated by a strong Brussels
squad. Although Blyth opened the
scoring, Brussels answered with
too many goals to return. No doubt
that nasty flu bug that several
members of the Blyth troop have
been combating helped to knock
the wind out of their sails, but the
Brussels team were a hardy force to
reckon with.
Blyth team members include
Collin Whitfield, Colton Ken, Matt
Chalmers, Adam-Cronin, Grant
Sparling, Tyler Stevenson, Michael
McDowell, Lukas Witherspoon,
Jeffrey Vidito, Luke Cooke and
Kirby Cook.
Coaches Pat, Dwight & Derek
are very pleased with the team's
efforts and improvements made this
year.
Whitfield, Kernighan and Ander-
son.
Two days later the team had a lit-
tle more of a struggle, but still
nailed a 5-3 win over a visiting
Howick team.
Again the visitors struck first, but
Anderson tied it soon after with his
first of two. Bean assisted. Clinton
took the lead going out of the first
with just five seconds left.
Anderson's second came next
with help from Austin, then Austin
and Taylor Hesse!wood set up Kyle
Nixon to give them the lead. Clin-
ton tied it just minutes later.
Blyth finally got the power they
were looking for holding their
opponenets back in the third, while
cashing in two more. Hesselwood
got the marker this time with
assists to Bean and Anderson.
Austin tallied the last goal.
It's been quite a week for Bel-
grave Junior Girls as they posted
two big victories.
On Feb. 7, the team blasted away
at their guests from Ripley enroute
to an 8-1 win. Nicole Procter and
Michelle Cook teamed up for the
first two goals of the game, with
Procter scoring first, assisted by
Cook, then turning it around for the
second.
Procter set up the first two goals
of the second period, with Laurin
Hoegy nailing the first and Cook
tallying the next.
In the third Cook nailed her hat-
trick on an unassisted shot, then
tagged another off a play by Rachel
Elliott.
Elliott then took her turn scoring
the final two goals of the game.
Sarah McDonald assisted on the
second point. The lone Ripley goal
was scored in the second period.
Coach Steve Cook said great
passing and positional play con-
tributed to this victory. "They
excelled against a less experienced
Ripley squad," he said.
On Feb. 14 Candace McLellan
earned her first shutout in an 11-0
romp against Port Elgin. Scoring
hattricks for Belgrave were Elliott
and Cook. Nicole Procter earned
two while Lindsay Hopf, Kristin
Palmer and Alyssa Ruttan each
notched singles. Assists went to
Cook with two, Nicole Walker,
Hoegy and Palmer.
Despite the score, Coach Cook
said the opponents had a great time.
"Each girl took a turn scraping the
ice just for the experience," he said.
In another game that day, Bel-
grave faced a tough Wingham
squad and came up short 5-3.
"Palmer made many sensational
saves to keep us in this game," said
Coach Cook.
All three markers were earned in
the third, by Cook, with Hoegy get-
ting one assist.
Coach Cook was less than
thrilled with the officiating in this
game, saying that the Wingham
team got away with many infrac-

tions which would normally have
resulted in penalties. Injuries
reduced the already small number
of Belgrave skaters, a fact that
prompted Coach Cook to add,
"What needs to be said is the great
dedication these girls have to their
team. Sarah McDonald came to
play after being down with the flu
earlier in the day. She gave it her
all until illness struck once again."
"She refused to leave, however,
and stayed on the player's bench to
support her teammates. This is
what hockey is all about, hardwork,
dedication and all-around team
play."
