For Teens, By Teens
Future can be a scary place to visit
By Amy Crawford
It seems like only yesterday I
was in public school, without a care
in the world and my only worry
was cooties. Walking down a single
hallway in a small school where
you know everyone, your priorities
were what to wear. What everyone
thought of you seemed so
important.
Graduating from public school
your priorities change slightly; you
are still worried about what people

In recent weeks it seems there
has been a lot in the news about
why teenage girls are becoming so
violent.
These stories, columns and
articles all appear to have sprung
from the beating of 14-year-old
Jackie Visee in Kitchener on
Saturday night, Jan. 17.
Visee was at a party at the home
of a friend whose mother was away
that evening. At 12:45 a.m.,
residents of the apartment building
heard screaming. A few, including
one 14-year-old boy, went to check
it out, but were not admitted into
the apartment.
When they finally discovered
what happened, they were greeted
by a gruesome sight. Visee was
laying in a heap on the floor. Her
long blond hair had been cut off
with a knife, she had multiple cuts
and bruises and a broken nose.
Two girls besides Visee had
stayed, but all the others had run
off, jumping off the second story
balcony. A 17-year-old girl has
been charged with robbery,
aggravated assault, extortion,
unlawful confinement, and uttering
death threats.
In Toronto, there was also a gang
of 15-year-old girls who faced
more than a dozen charges. Some
of these charges were harassment,
assault, uttering death threats and
extortion. The five teens made a
court appearance on Jan. 21. One
sat in the courtroom giggling and
smiling, even as one of the other
girls cried. Their problems arose
from a November fight which
involved two machetes.
The media has latched onto these
two examples as proof that female
violence is on a rise among teens. It
seems as if this year is so much
worse than last year. It could be
that, or it could be that it is only
now becoming something people
are growing aware of.
The viciousness of these acts are
think of you, but you begin to dress
in jeans and sweaters and you
throw a hairdo together that will
hopefully last you the day. Moving
into such a large building, with
many hallways and different rooms
you begin to have some thoughts
about what you are going to do in
life.
Being only 17, I am faced with
many decisions that can make or
break my future. It's scary to think
that the decisions I make now may
be for the rest of my life.

At the end of this week, one great
event will catch the attention of the
world. An event that only happens
every four years, bringing about a
hundred nations together in
competition. The event - the Winter
Olympics. this time it will be held
in Nagano, Japan.
Four years ago, in Lillehammer,
Norway, when the last Winter
Olympics occurred, Canada's team
made a record of 13 Olympic
medals. The Canadian Olympic
Association has said they expect
the medal count for Canada at these
Olympics to be higher.
Hockey does not need much
explanation; it is, of course, our
national sport. The men's team is
headed by NHLers like Eric
Lindros and Wayne Gretzky. The
women's team is unbeatable except
by the USA. Both teams have great
chances at a gold medal.
Speed skating, is where two
skaters race against each other on
an extra large oval rink. Canada has
great chances with world record
holders on both the men's and
women's side of the sport. Canada's
hopes: Jeremy Wotherspoon and
Neal Marshall in the men's events
and Catriona LeMay Doan and
Susan Auch on the women's side of
things.
Short track speed skating uses the
same type of skating as long track
except that the arena is much
smaller and they race in groups of
fours. Also, there tends to be a lot
One of the first decisions I made
was to go back to school for
another semester and pick up as
many extra courses as I could that
would benefit me in my career
choice. One course that I took this
year decided my fate as a
journalist. I co-oped at The Citizen
and found that this was definitely
what I wanted to do for the rest of
my life.
From there I have already
planned how my money will be
more wipe outs. Canada's hopes:
The relay teams headed by Isabelle
Charest and Marc Gagnon.
Figure skating tries to combine
artistry and technical difficulty.
Imagine doing four rotations in the
air and landing on one foot! The
judges determine marks and in
some cases they determine the
marks before they see the skating,
especially in the dance section.
Canada's hopes: Elvis Stojko in
mens and Shae-Lynn Bourne and
Victor Kraatz in dance.
Biathlon combines cross-country
skiing with marksmanship. Skiers
race quickly from one spot to
another then stop and shoot at a
target. If they miss the target five
seconds get added on to the total
end time. Canada's hopes: Two
time olympic gold medalist from
1994, Myriam Bedard.
Alpine 'skiing is a race down a
mountain trying to get the fastest
time. Canada's hope: If Edi
Podivinski has a lucky day he
might win bronze.
Freestyle skiing is a newer sport.
Skiers go over a ramp then do
several flips and turns in the air
before hitting the snow. In moguls
skiers go over several small jumps
on a race down a run. Canada's
hopes: Nicolas Fontaine, Andy
Capacik in men's aerials, Veronica
Brenner and Caroline Oliver in
women's aerials, Jean-Luc Brassard
in men's moguls.
Curling is new this year. Athletes
spent from my summer job. 1 won't
be foolishly spending my money on
the latest shoes or the newest style
of jeans. I have to make some
major buys this year, one being a
high-quality camera which is
second on my expensive shopping
list. The first is a car.
Even with all these buys I will
have to work yet another summer
to raise my tuition fee for school.
With the fact of food and shelter
taken for granted during my public
school years, I will have to pay for
Many of these articles include
interviews with teenage girls who
imply that these girls pick on other
girls for status and beat on them to
prove how tough they can be. It's
sad to think of the state society
must be in, when a girl thinks
attacks like these are going to
increase her popularity and then, in
some cases actually do. •
throw curling rocks down the ice
and try to get them in a circle. I am
not actually sure how you get
points. Canada's hopes: men's and
women's teams.
Bobsledding is when racers race
a cart down an ice track and try for
the best times. Canada's hopes:
Pierre Lueders two and four-man
teams.
Snowboarding is also a new
sport, consisting of downhill
snowboarding and the half pipe.
This is another I am unfamiliar
with.- Canada's hopes: Mark
,Fawcett, downhill and Trevor
Andrew, half pipe.
"Go, Canada, Go!"
these things myself. I won't be
privy to such indulgences as steak,
chicken breast and other delicious
foods that will soon become once
in a while deals, like when I come
home from college to visit.
My itinerary for the next three
years of my life will be college and
after that hopefully a job in my
chosen field.
My ,high school years have gone
by so quickly and soon so will my
college years. And I just started
getting used to being the top dog in
school again! My stomach fills
with butterflies already at the
prospect of college.
Yes, I miss my public school
days a lot. Like the saying goes,
"The older you get the quicker time
passes." Growing up is the scariest
thing I've ever had to face.
Violence shouldn't be cool
