She sits relatively calmly in a chair at her hair stylist's, waiting for the floral arrangements to arrive from the florist so her headpiece can be incorporated into her style. It is just hours before the bride walks down the aisle to wed her groom. It is then that she discovers the headpiece is overdone with long strands of pearls and beads trailing from the large floral design. As she began to pull it apart to leave a much smaller arrangement, she found the bouquets for herself and the bridesmaids had been equally overdone. This bride's lack of pre-planning with her florist led to last minute changes at a time which can be hectic enough. To avoid disappointing results, florists suggest brides consult with them two to three times before the wedding, including. a last minute are the perfect finishing check either a month before the date for artificial arrangement or closer for live flowers. The first step in ordering flower arrangements for the wedding is to call three to six months in advance to book a consultation with the florist. "For July weddings, brides should be booking appointments now," says Luann Taylor, owner of Luann's Country Flowers in Blyth. Appointments allow the florist to give the bride her undivided atten- tion. Brides should bring colour sam- ples, if possible, and her budget constraints. "We work with the budget and help co-ordinate colours," says Taylor. As well as deciding on flowers, other accessories can be booked at the consultation. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 1998. Wedding Showcase '98 Consultations with florist begin months in advance benches, lighted lamp posts, cande- labras and mailboxes. "The bride should be in touch once or twice to confirm plans," she says, " and a month and a half before the wedding to make sure all is going well." Linda Wilson of Unique Designs, Blyth, agrees that consultations should be booked early, particular- ly if a certain florist is desired. "The style of the gown and the bridesmaids' is also important," says Wilson, "so the bouquets will enhance the dresses." Along with a colour scheme, brides should consider if they pre- fer hand-tied flowers or the bou- quet in a holder and if there is a favourite flower. The choice of flower is critical with live arrangements as not all species are available in all seasons. Another suggestion from Wilson is to consider a theme for the occa- sion. Whether it be victorian, cherubs, motorcycles or western, it can add a unique touch to the day. For Shirley Wheeler of Brussels, consideration of bouquets must include the bride herself. "A large bouquet for a small woman just doesn't work." With the popularity of summer weddings, Wheeler suggests the initial consultation should be at least three to four months in advance. Working with silk flowers, Wheeler likes to have the arrange- ments completed a month before the wedding date to allow the bride time to confirm the order. "This (time frame) is also better for the bride," she says. It lets her get one matter settled well in advance. As for colour schemes, Taylor is seeing a variety of tastes for this year's weddings with some brides opting for pastels though dark colours are still popular. "Very dark colours such as bur- gundy, navy and green arc still popular," says Wilson.
