Brussels Novice Rep team
finished the regular season on a
high.
Friday night, Hensall travelled to
Brussels and played an action-filled
game. In the first period, Matt
White scored twice on assists from
Greg Bowers and Chase Chapman.
In the second period, Hensall
managed to sneak one shot past
Brussels netminder Andrew
McDonald then Adam McClure
scored on a pass from Chase
Chapman for Brussels.
There was no looking back as
Bowers scored one on a pass from
White and McClure to start off the
third period. The other line then got
in on the scoring action when
Christopher Jutzi scored on a pass
from Cory Chapman, who then
scored on a pass from Chris Corbett
and
Jutzi and White added unassisted
goals to end Brussels' scoring. The
final score was 8 - 1.
Saturday night, the novices met
up with the Mitchell Rep team.

The Western Junior 'C' Hockey
League held its annual awards
banquet at the Davidson Centre in
Kincardine, Saturday evening with
the Wingham Ironmen earning four
individual trophies.
Three members of the team were
also selected to the first or second
all-star team.
For the second consecutive year,
the Ironmen goaitenders allowed
the fewest goals against. That was
helped this season by a total of six
shut-outs.
In 35 games played this season,
the dynamic duo of David Bartman
and Greg Ritchie gave up a mere
87 goals for a 2.48 goals against
average.
A strong defence also helped the
Ironmen allow the fewest goals. In
that regard, three-year veteran Brad
Anderson was named the top
defenceman. He concluded the
season with 10 goals and 22 assists
for 32 points.
Second year player Troy Dosman
was the recipient of the most
sports-minded player award.
During the year he had nine goals
and 30 assists for 39 points and
only picked up 12 minutes in
penalties.
The fourth individual honour
bestowed upon Ironmen was coach
of the year. First year coach Todd
Bender was the recipient, but some
of the credit was given to assistant
coaches Doug Neil and Louie
Livingston. ,
Corey Hayter of the Walkerton
Blackhawks was the most valuable
player for the 1997-98 regular
season.
Brent McDermid of the
Kincardine Bulldogs was the
recipient of the rookie of the year
The game was quite evenly
matched and the action travelled
quickly from one end to the other.
White, on a pass from Chase
Chapman was finally able to lift
one past the Mitchell goaltender to
score one at 5:13 in the second
period.
The Brussels boys tried hard to
hang onto the lead but at 6:10 in
the third period, they were scored'
against and were unable to break
the tie. The team played an
excellent game and went home
feeling pleasantly exhausted with a
1 - 1 tie.
Sunday night, the Rep team
travelled to Mitchell to play against
their additional entry team and
came home with a shut out.
Corbett scored an unassisted goal
in the first period and White scored
in the third period on a pass from
Adam Corbett. The final score was
2 - 0.
The Novice Reps start their
playoffs against Howick on Feb. 13

Anderson and Troy McDermid of
Walkerton.
Walkerton's Hayter is the first
team left winger, Curtis Pinder of
Mount Forest is first team centre
and Chris King of Kincardine is the
right winger.

second all-star team goaltender.

Buchanan of Kincardine, Ryan
Hollister of Hanover and Paul
Brown of Mount Forest.
The 18 players who received

out hard and played well in both
ends of the rink to be rewarded

Hunts get PBs
The speed skating season is well
underway for the Hunt family of
Ethel and "personal best" times are
being wracked up.
Kathy, daughters, Carla and
Cayla and son, Brett, started the
season on an up note, Nov. 16-17 at
the Hanje memorial meet in Water-
loo, hosted by their home club, the
Kitchener-Waterloo Sertoma Club.
Cayla earned a second place fin-
ish in the PeeWee Girls (ages seven
and eight) division while Brett took
third in the Bantam Boys (ages
nine and 10).
Cayla skated three personal best
times, with comparable skates at all
her meets this season.
Brett achieved personal bests at
the Kitchener-Waterloo meet as
well as several at a later Cambridge
meet.
Though Kathy did not place in
the top of her class at the Hanje
Memorial, she said she was happy
with her seventh place as other
commitments have cut into training
time this year.
Kathy did take first in a Master's
race in London, Dec. 6.
The Hunts travelled to Belleville
for a Jan. 17-18 all-points meet.
At an all-points meet, competi-
tors are divided into heats depend-
ing on their times, rather than age
group.
Carla recorded personal best in
the 500 and 777-metre races and
achieved some Canadian and North
American qualifying times for the
national competition at the end of
the season.
She has now attained qualifying
times in four races, the total num-
ber required, to allow her to enter.
An interesting occurrence at the
Belleville meet was the grouping of
three parents with their children, in
the same category. As well as
Kathy and Carla Hunt racing
together, two father and son teams
also competed.
The Hunts will skate in Bramp-
ton, Jan. 31, and in Kingston, Feb
7-8.
The Bulls took that 1-0 lead into
the first intermission.
The second period was all Barons
as they scored three goals, one
short-handed, one on the powerplay
and one even strength to make the
score 3-1 Hanover after two
periods.
The Barons added one more goal
in the third period to make the final
score 4-1.
The Bulls record for the season is
five wins - 23 losses and eight ties
which allowed them to finish in
sixth place and take the last playoff
spot. The Bulls play in Kincardine
against the Bulldogs on Friday
After a season-ending loss to
Bayfiejd on Jan. 21, Blyth Atom
Bulldogs split the first two games
in their best of three playoff series
against Hensall.
In Bayfield, Nathan Wither-
spoon, Brett Bean and Darren
Austin notched the Myth points in
this 6-3 effort. Assists went to
Cody Anderson with two, Tyler
Kernighan and Witherspoon.
Jan. 22 Hensall stormed into
town for the first playoff game and
night to start their playoff series at
8:30 p.m. for game number one in a
best of seven with game number
two back in Brussels Sunday
afternoon at 2 p.m.
Game number three will be in
Kincardine on the following
Friday, Feb. 6 at 8:30 p.m. with
game number four in Brussels at 2
p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 8.
Tentative scheduling for game
number five (if necessary) will be
Feb. 13 in Kincardine. Game
number six (if necessary) will be
Saturday, Feb. 14 in Brussels with
game number seven (if necessary)
in Kincardine Sunday, Feb. 15.
blew away their hosts 4-2. Ander-
son and Bean notched the home
team's markers with Kemighan and
Witherspoon pairing up to assist on
the latter goal.
Jan. 24 was turnabout as Blyth
travelled to Hensall and showed up
their hosts by a score of 5-2.
Witherspoon got it started in the
first period, with an assist going to
Kendall Whitfield. The defense
held off the home squad so Blyth
