Min. of Health announces consolidated DHC site
The Ontario Ministry of Health
has decided the office for the
consolidated Grey-Bruce and
Huron Perth District Health
Council will be in Mitchell, the
transition team planning the
consolidation announced Jan. 15.
The office will be at the current
site of the Huron Perth District
Health Council office, 235 St.
George St. (Highway 23 North),
Mitchell.
The transition team, as part of the
planning process for the
consolidation of the Grey-Bruce
and Huron Perth District Health
Councils, carried out a search for a
central office site in October and
November, and considered sites in
Hanover, Listowel, Walkerton and
Wingham. Criteria in the
consideration included central
location within the consolidated
health council region, proximity to
amenities required for bringing
together people from throughout
the four counties, parking and
wheelchair accessibility. A site in
Listowel was recommended to the
Ministry of Health in November.
In selecting Mitchell, the
Ministry of Health cited financial
considerations — the Huron Perth
District Health Council is in the
second year of a five-year lease on
the offices. As well, the site will
require few changes to
accommodate the consolidated
health council. Other sites
considered by the transition team
would have required extensive
renovations.
In making the announcement, the
Ministry of Health said the
transition team, and the new health
council, when appointed, can look
at ways to equitably serve all the
residents of Grey, Bruce, Perth and
Huron Counties. The possibility of
moving council and committee
meetings to locations throughout
the four counties, using video
conference technology, and
locating a part-time workstation in
Grey-Bruce, has already been
discussed by the transition team,
and has been supported in principle
by the Ministry. The new council
will consider such job options and
make recommendations to the
Ministry of Health.
A workstation would involve
having office space available to
health planners when they arc
working in the Grey-Bruce area.
The announcement of the office
site is the first step locally in the

ambulance service by municipali-
ties.
A resolution passed by the
administration, finance and person-
nel committee, and supported by
council, said the county continues
to object to the downloading of
ambulance service but recognizes
that under Bill 152 the government
can ignore this objection.
Clinton Reeve Carol Mitchell felt
that given the reality of the provin-
cial determination to impose the
cost of ambulances on municipali-
province-wide consolidation of
district health councils which was
announced by the Ministry of
Health on Sept. 4. The next step
will be the announcement of the
appointment of the new Grey Bruce
Huron Perth District Health
Council, expected by the end of
January. It has been recommended
that the new council be made of
ties, Huron could gain by serving
as a pilot site. "If we are elected as
a pilot site we will have the oppor-
tunity for more input," she said.
"The first input is usually heard the
best."

Councillor Mitchell, chair of the
Huron County Board of Health,
was named as the county's repre-
sentative on the 20-member amal-
gamated District Health Council for
Grey, Bruce, Huron and Perth.
Brian Ferguson, reeve of Seaforth,
will be the alternate.
equal membership from each of the
four counties.
Once the new members are
appointed, the process of selecting
staff will begin. Applications will
be sought from existing staff
members. The new health council
is to begin operations by the end of
March.

The good news, according to Dr.
Beth Henning, acting medical offi-
cer of health, is that the influenza
strain expected this year is not as
virulent as the strain that hit the
area last year. There is no fear
about the impact of the strain cur-
rently making news in Hong Kong
until at least next year's flu season,
she reported to the board of health.
