Fair winners Awards were presented at the Brussels Agricultural Society annual meeting last Wednesday night at the BMG Community Centre. Fair Ambassador Lee Ann McDonald, back left, presented the Jeanne Ireland Award for highest points in schoolwork exhibited at the 1997 fall fair to Jason Snider, front left. Jeff Cardiff presented the Murray Cardiff Award for highest points in the Junior section to Jessica Spink. Brussels Agricultural Society held its annual meeting at the BM&G Community Centre on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 7:30 p.m. President Dorothy Cummings called the meeting to order. In reviewing 1997 she mentioned the main fundraiser was the Homecoming Barbecue. Attendance of approximately 1,300 people, brought a profit of $6,000. She asked everyone to think of some ideas for future fundraisers. Overall the 1997 Fair was a great success. All exhibits were up with the exception of flowers. The rain during the parade, dampened spirits but didn't hinder the midway. Guest speaker Margaret Jarvis spoke on Fair Queen memories and experiences that have remained part of her life. The trophies presented were the Jeanne Ireland Award for most points in the school work to Jason Snider from Grey Central by Lee Ann McDonald, Fair Ambassador and Murray Cardiff Award for most points in both school and junior sections to Jessica Spink by Jeff Cardiff. Suggestions brought up in the president's reports were to have the Ambassador Competition on the Tuesday night of the fair and have local talent downstairs until the crowning. The annual meeting has changed from having a meal to a light lunch after an evening meeting. Lee Ann McDonald spoke on her activities since becoming Fair Ambassador. Some highlights were attending the District 8 Annual Meeting at Howick, meeting other Queens and Ambassadors, being in the Santa Claus Parade and meeting the students at the schools. No auditor's report was available. Ralph and Pat Watson were re- elected as auditors for '98. The 1998 fair dates are Sept. 15 and 16. The theme will be "Farm to Table". The Ontario Fair Convention will be Feb. 17 - 19 at the Royal York, Toronto. As many people as possible were urged to attend. To prevent future problems, ideas to rope off exhibits and put "Do Not Touch" signs on the tables were discussed. Jeff Cardiff was put in charge of making cages from chicken wire to house the baking. Having a showcase made to display Fall Fair Memorabilia in the auditorium was discussed. To keep interest in the fair active, a suggestion was made to appoint a representative from each of the service clubs and organizations in the area. A suggestion to auction off the first prize pies, bread and cakes on Tuesday night was made as a fundraiser. School news Continued from page 2 The Grade 2 class has been talking about birthdays. They did many graphs on when people's birthdays are. They have been putting patterns on their pizza, as well! They have also been talking about their favourite season. Grade 3 has been busy making a shoebox diorama of a winter scene using pine cones, painted to look like tree sand cotton for snow. In math, they have been practising how to add and regroup numbers with two digits. Also, they have been working on their class newsletter items, and reading and writing winter stories. In Grade 4 this week, they are working on a poem called "Good Study Habits." They put a picture on it, or they can frame if they choose to. Right now, they are doing book reports. After that they will be doing speeches. In music, they are starting a new song called My Name is Jack. • GOODS • SERVICES • TRADES 10"ITHPlort7; CLASSIFIEDS "Stratford Cemetery" Memorials Ltd.
