Tykes win 2, tie 1
The Blyth Bulldog Tykes had a
successful week, earning two wins
and a tie at the Bruce Williams
Memorial Fun Day event in
Kurtzville.
The first contest, which matched
them against Howick, Jan. 13, saw
Blyth taking a 7-2 victory.
Scoring was done by Derek
Youngblut (three), Anthony Peters
(two) Johnathon McDowell (one)
and Lee Watkins (one).
Good team commitment to
defense and great goaltending are
the big reason behind the Brussels
PeeWees' second tournament
championship.
The team travelled to Clifford for
an 8 a.m. start this past weekend.
Lee Dilworth scored the only goal
of the first period at the 9:10 mark
on a nice pass from Tyler
Campbell.
Campbell scored the next two
unassisted goals to give the
PeeWees a 3-0 lead.
Campbell completed his hattrick
with 2 minutes left in the third,
with helpers going to Darryl
McClure and Jimmy Franken.
Brussels scored two powerplay
goals in this game and goalie Bryce
Wedow turned aside 11 shots for
the shut-out.
Game two saw Brussels face-off
against their neighbouring town,
Blyth. Blyth opened the scoring at
the 8:07 mark as Cole Stewart
scored, unassisted. Brussels tied the
score at the 5:29 mark as Dilworth
scored from Campbell and Scott
Glitz.
Brussels took the lead at the 6:34
mark of the second when Darryll
Houston scored, unassisted.
Blyth tied the score at the 3:13
mark, when Stewart scored from
The Blyth Midget Bulldogs
played a single WOAA league
game last week as they hosted the
red-hot Clinton Midgets on Jan. 12.
The Bulldogs played one of their
better games of late as they
rebounded from an earlier drubbing
by Clinton, winning this match 6-4.
Blyth opened the game scoring in
the first minute of play as Jeff
Cowan set up a wide open Steve
Oldfield for the goal. Clinton tied
the game with a power play goal
three minutes later, but the
Bulldogs responded with two late
goals to lead 3-1 after the first
Jefferay Carter. Then with just 1:55
left in the game Franken blasted a
shot. Campbell jumped on the
rebound and fired it past the Blyth
goalie to give Brussels a 3-2 lead.
Fifty seconds later Houston
finished the scoring, racing in on a
breakaway pass from Campbell.
The Brussels boys skated into the
championship game with a 4-2 win
over Blyth.
The final game saw Brussels
playing Milverton. In the season,
Milverton beat Brussels 4-3 and 5-
4, and tied them 1-1, so the
Brussels boys knew they were in
for a tough game.
Milverton scored the only one of
the first as Adam Harloff knocked
it in at the 6:04 mark from Chris
Stapiz. Solid goal keeping by
Wedow kept Milverton off the
board for any more.
Brussels kept working hard and
finally were rewarded with a goal
as Campbell fired a shot wide that
bounced out front and went in off
the Milverton goalie's stick to tie
the game 1-1 at the 1:03 mark of
the secona.
Halfway through the third Mark
Hunter notched a powerplay goal
from Adam Hall and Houston to
give Brussels the first and final lead
of the game.
frame.
Jamie Black assisted on the go-
ahead goals as Mike Haggitt found
the net after a rink-length dash.
Twenty-five seconds later Oldfield
found Mike Courtney alone in front
of the net and Courtney made no
mistake as he faced a wide open
net.
Courtney and Kyle Anderson
teamed up two minutes into the
second as Anderson buried
Courtney's pinpoint pass. Clinton
crept to within a goal before Mike
Ansley scored the eventual game

The squad returned to Kurtzville
on Saturday to take on Woolwich
Block in the morning.
Off netters by Youngblut (three)
and Peters, Blyth earned a 4-4 tie.
Blyth again notched four points
when they met Wallace I in the
afternoon, though this time it was
good enough for the win.
Peters popped two while Tony
Bean added the others.
The final was 4-2.
