Pinery hosts winter day event
Many people enjoy the
marvelous sights and sounds of
Pinery Park during the summer
season and some of these people
know that Pinery Park is a fantastic
place to be in the winter. The
Friends of Pinery Park would like
more people to know that Pinery
Park is alive and exciting through
all four seasons, so they invite them
to experience the wonders of winter
in Pinery Park at The Friends of
Pinery Park Winter Day Event, on
Saturday, Jan. 31.
Meteorologist, Jay Campbell
from CFPL, will begin the day with
a presentation on the El Nino
weather phenomenon at 1 p.m. in
the Visitor Theatre. Campbell will
explain what El Nino is and how
the current one will impact on
Pinery Park.
At 2 p.m., in the Visitor Centre
Theatre, Kathy Kerr, one of Pinery
Park's naturalists, will lead a 45-
minute slide show about our winter
birds.
At 7:30 that evening, Tom Purdy
will conduct a session on owls in
the Visitor Centre Theatre. After
his slide talk, Purdy will conduct an
"Owl Prowl" to listen for the calls
of nesting Great Horned Owls in
the park. One of his talents is his
ability to sound like an owl and
participants in the "Owl Prowl" are
likely to hear and see some of the
park's owl inhabitants.
The Friends of Pinery Park are
very pleased to welcome Novacks
of London, Ontario to their Winter
Day Event. Novacks will have a
display of winter camping
equipment and related gear set up
in the Visitor Centre from 10 a.m.
to 4 p.m. Some of Novacks staff
will be available to answer
questions about winter camping
and to assist the public in planning
a winter camping adventure.
At 3 p.m. the staff from Novacks
will conduct a demonstration of
their equipment and their model
winter camp site.
Other activities during the day
include skiing, tobogganing,
hiking, bird watching, deer
watching, and skating. (conditions
permitting. For information on
winter camping, call 519-243-2220.
The cost of the Winter Day Event
is $7 per car.
For those people who are
members of The Friends of Pinery
Park, the day will include a potluck
chili dinner and a bed and
breakfast. Friends members will
have the opportunity to purchase a
room in the Park Meeting Centre
overnight or to experience winter
camping in Riverside Campground.
On Sunday, Feb. 1, Friends who
have stayed in the Meeting Centre
or in Riverside Campground, can
purchase a full farm style breakfast
in the Meeting Centre.
• For those people interested in the
potluck chili dinner or the bed and
breakfast, a $20 fee will purchase a
one year family Friends
membership. If you wish to be a
part of these activities, call Shirley
at 519-243-1521.
The Friends of Pinery Park is a
charity that raises funds for park
interpretive, educational, scientific
and historic projects and programs.
Members are motivated to join
because of their love and concern
for Pinery's beautiful, natural
habitat. Benefits include
newsletters, special events, voting
privileges and discounts in the
"Savanna Shores" nature store.
After a two week holiday the
Brussels 4-H knitters met for the
third meeting at Kathy Bridge's on
Monday Jan. 5.
The meeting began with the
pledge led by the president, then
minutes were read by the secretary
and the roll call was answered.
The next thing members did
before they got to their knitting was
vote on a title page and name for
the club. There was only one title
page submitted. The name selected
was ''The Brussels Sheepish
Knitters".

Snowmobilers ride for funds
"Let it snow, let it snow, let it
snow," is the refrain of
snowmobilers across the South
Western Ontario Region as they
prepare for Snowarama '98.
Now in its 24th year, Snowarama
events take place throughout
Ontario to raise funds in support of
Easter Seal kids and their families.
The South Western Ontario Region
will kick off their Snowarama
events in Wingham on Feb. 1, and
will continue with a second event
in Strathroy on Feb. 14.
Since 1975, Snowarama events
have raised over $13 million for the
Easter Seal Society, Ontario. Each
event is co-ordinated in conjunction
with the Ontario Federation of
Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) and
local Easter Seal service club
partners. In the South Western
Ontario Region there are more than
923 Easter Seal families who will
benefit from these events.
"Were thrilled to be the OFSC's
Charity of Choice once again in
HAPPY 14TH BIRTHDAY
"LES"
Jan. 19th
1998," says Jackie Steele,
provincial Snowarama co-
ordinator. ''Dedicated Ontario
snowmobilers raise over $550,000
every year through Snowarama
events, to show that they care about
these special young people. This is
a vital component to our annual
fundraising goals at Easter Seals."
The Easter Seal Society, Ontario
provides essential services and
programs to children with physical
disabilities and their families
through integrated preschool
programs, community support,
financial assistance for equipment,
special camps, parent delegate
programs and funding for research.
