Couple brings idea from Florida for Greenway walk
‘-'"",•41%.v
How it works
The signs at the beginning of the proposed 'workout' for the Blyth Greenway nature trail
would explain what to expect and how to perform routine properly. An inspiration of Doug
Scrimgeour and his wife Diane Radford, who saw a fit trail in Florida and thought it would
complement the Blyth project nicely, it is aniticipated that there will be little cost involved.
Fitness fun
The proposed fitness program for the Blyth Greenway
Nature Trail would incorporate everything from acrio-
vascular workouts to toning and stretching. Here, Diane
Radford tries one of the stations at the Florida fit-trail, she
and her husband Doug Scrimgeour visited.
By Bonnie Gropp
Citizen staff
Doug Scrimgeour and his wife,
Diane Radford, of Blyth have
spearheaded an exciting new pro-
ject for the village's Greenway Pro-
ject.
During a trip to Florida last fall,
the couple discovered an idea that
Diane immediately recognized
would be a complementary, and
interesting addition to the recently
developed nature trail in Blyth.
Called Fit-Trail, the name is fair-
ly self-explanatory. Laid out over
an area of land is a series of activi-
ties like stretching, cardio routines
and muscle toning, designed to pro-
mote and encourage fitness out of
doors. The concept is created with
essentially some wood and pipes.
"What we liked was the simplici-
ty of building it," said Scrimgeour.
Like any good fitness program
the routines are set at different lev-
els so walkers can move at their
own pace and do the exercise to
their degree of difficulty.
Scrimgeour said that while the
trail in Florida was laid out on a flat
field, he saw tremendous potential
for a similar one on the Greenway
walk. "After the idea was approved
by council, we approached Mait-
land Valley Conservation Authori-
Women and Rural Economic
Development (WRED) and the
Huron Business Development
Corporation (HBDC) announce
FOODLINKS: a networking event
for people in the business of food
on Jan. 21 (snowdate Jan. 28) from
1 - 5 p.m. at the OMAFRA
building at 100 Don St. in Clinton.
"The food sector is Huron
County's number one industry"
says Carol Rock, executive director
of WRED. "Huron County has
more agricultural sales than
Newfoundland, PEI, New
Brunswick or Nova Scotia. We
recognize that there is a great deal
of activity here among the food
businesses. WRED and HBDC
want to help people capitalize on
ty, which has been our advisor on
Greenway. We hope to incorporate
the fitness walk down by the river.
We have far more capability of
making it interesting," Scrimgeour
said.
The route, which should be
approximately a half a mile, will be
incorporated into the existing trail
system.
Each station has photos and
descriptions of the activity, as well
as what the activity will do for you.
The Greenway Project, a nature
walk set on the old railine at the
north edge of Blyth, was an ambi-
tious undertaking completed
through countless volunteer hours
donated by service groups and indi-
viduals. With the exception of the
signs, which Scrimgeour wants to
find annual sponsorship for, he
hopes this phase of the ever evolv-
ing Greenway trail will be no dif-
ferent. "This should cost virtually
nothing," he said of the minimal
materials required and simple
design.
While where exactly the fitness
walk will begin and end on the trail
has not been finalized, but it is
expected that work will begin this
spring.
"Our idea is that this will make it
all more interesting. I think it is an
easy and logical addition to Green-
way, " Scrimgeour said.
that activity and the resources that
are here to help Huron food
businesses improve their bottom
line."
The Foodlinks event will provide
an opportunity for farmers, food
processors, restauranteurs, owners
of food shops, caterers and anyone
else in the business of food to make
connections, identify common
needs and explore new opportuni-
ties for business alliances to help
meet those needs.
To register for this event or for
more information call Carol-Ann
Lorentz at WRED at 1-800-790-
9949. A $5 donation is suggested to
help defray costs. The WRED
Rural Alliance Project is funded by
the Women and Economic
Development Consortium.
