The Milverton Atom goalie fends off this attack as his teammate gets the edge on an
advancing Blyth opponent. The edge didn't often go the way of the visitors as the home
town squad sent Milverton home defeated 10-2.

Blyth Atoms play in B final
It has been a very busy three
weeks for the Blyth Atoms as they
participated in a holiday tourna-
ment as well as regular season play.
The squad met Brussels, Dec. 21,
for what turned into a blow-out.
With only one netter by the
hometown team, off the stick of
Josh Albrechtas, Blyth took the 7-1
loss.
Dec. 23 saw the start of the Hen-
sall tournament, where Blyth met a
very tough Elma-Logan team as
their first opponent.
The lone Blyth goal was scored
by Ryan McClinchey, with assis-
tance from Nathan Witherspoon
and Tyler Kemighan.
Blyth went down 10-1.
The squad got their legs in the
second matchup when they took on
Hensall.
The Blyth Midget Bulldogs split
a pair of league games last week as
they let a victory slip away against
the Zurich Thunder on Jan. 5,
losing 6-5 before stealing a victory
in Goderich on Jan. 11 edging the
Sailors 7-5.
Against Zurich, the Bulldogs let
a comfortable 5-2 lead evaporate in
the third as the Zurich Thunder
notched the game's final four goals
to steal a 6-5 win.
Mike Haggitt assisted on the
game's opening goal as Kyle
Anderson scored on a shifty
backhand shot. Haggitt and Jamie
Black then helped give Blyth a 2-0
lead as Corey Campbell finished
off a two-on-one rush.
Zurich rebounded to tie the game
2-2 before the first period ended,
but the Midgets responded with the
only two goals in the second period
to take a 4-2 lead after two. Jon
Kochis set up Haggitt for the goal
that gave Blyth a 3-2 lead five
minutes into the second. Twenty-
six seconds later the line of
Anderson, Jeff Cowan and Mike
Courtney went to work with Cowan
lighting the red light after turning
the Zurich Defenceman inside-out
with some deft dekes.
This same trio gave Blyth their 5-
2 lead 39 seconds into the third as
Cowan one-timed Anderson's
behind-the-net pass through a maze
of legs and into the twine. Zurich
caught Blyth napping and tied the
game with three goals in the next
three minutes before notching the
game winner with six minutes and
30 seconds left in. the game.
Kernighan bulged the twine for
Blyth, at 3:16 of the first.
Hensall retaliated before the
buzzer to tie the score.
A Kernighan goal in the second
pushed the squad ahead only to lose
it late in the third.
Brett Bean earned an assist.
Blyth sealed the win with a sud-
den death overtime goal with 4:16
remaining. Darren Austin, assisted
by Kernighan, popped it in.
Blyth's turn of fortune would not
hold out as they were shut out by
West Lorne, 9-0, in their final
game.
They were named B division run-
ners-up.
The new year started on a better
note when they visited Clinton, Jan.
3.
Off the mark early, Cody Ander-
son scored at 11:05 of the first, fol-
Blyth enjoyed a two-man power
play for the final 37 seconds of the
game and also pulled their goalie
for an extra attacker, but the buzzer
sounded to end the game, enabling
Zurich to skate home with a well
deserved come-from-behind
victory.
Blyth almost returned the favour
against Goderich but used three
goals in the final 1:07 of play to
fend off an embarrassing defeat,
winning 7-5. Goderich took a 2-0
lead after three minutes of play but
the Dogs responded to take a 3-2
lead by the end of the first period.
The line of Campbell, Cowan
and Courtney did the damage as
Cowan opened the scoring before
Courtney gave Blyth the lead with
his first two goals of the game.
They each also garnered a first
period assist while Campbell
counted two assists.
Goderich tied the game 3-3 with
the only second-period goal to set
up a wild third frame.
Although the third period was 15
minutes long, the Midgets were
content to only put an effort into
the final four minutes. They
allowed Goderich to take an early
5-3 lead before mounting their late
game offensive assault.
Darryl Bromley started the
comeback on a Blyth power play
with four minutes remaining as he
set up Cory Bragg's blast from the
blueline. Cowan did much of the
corner work by assisting on the
Bulldogs' final three goals, first by
setting up Mike Ansley's game
equalizer with 1:07 left on the
lowed by Witherspoon, to take a
2-1 lead.
Taylor Hesselwood and
Kemighan assisted.
Up 3-1 with five minutes left in
the second period, off a goal by
Kernighan, Clinton drew closer
before the frame ended.
Bean pushed Blyth's lead to 4-1
early in the third before Clinton
once again narrowed the gap.
With a netter by Kernighan in the
dying minutes, Blyth locked up the
5-3 win.
Other assists went to Darcy
Cook, Chris Bernard, Anderson,
Kernighan, Bean and Austin.
The squad suffered a 10-2 loss
against Milverton, Jan. 8.
Kernighan scored both Blyth
goals while assists went to Cook,
Bean, Albrechtas and Witherspoon.
clock.
Cowan and Ansley then set up
the winning goal with only 27
seconds, remaining as Courtney
scored to notch his hattrick. Cowan
wasn't finished as he also assisted
on the insurance goal as Campbell
drilled the puck top shelf.
Although a full effort is needed
on most nights, the Bulldogs were
fortunate to record the win with a
poor effort right up until the game's
dying minutes. Against better
teams the results would have been
different but on Sunday night their
late game heroics enabled the
Bulldogs to steal a 7-5 victory.
