By Jim Brown Advance-Times Staff The Stratford Cullitons may have been playing with the Western Junior 'C' All-stars for two periods last Wednesday evening, but in the third they showed why they have been a Junior 'B' power house for the past few years. A four-goal performance by Jaren Eydt carried the Cullitons to an 8-4 decision over the All-stars. This was the 10th meeting between the All-stars and the Cullitons. Three members of the Wingham Ironmen and three members of the Brussels Bulls suited up for the Ironmen'playing for the All-stars were forwards Brett Sangster and Brent Williams and defenceman Brad Anderson. Representing the Bulls were forwards Shawn Springall and Curtis Nichol and defenceman Brett Fischer. Former Wingham Ironmen Tim Schultz was playing for the Cullitons. The All-stars were out to impress some of the scouts in the audience, and were also trying to prove that The Blyth Bantam hockey club, competed in the Chesley tournament this past weekend. Blyth was knocked out of the tournament in a semi-final loss to Mount Brydges. Blyth downed Fergus 4-2 and Lucan 6-2 to win their division, then met Chesley in the quarter- final and trailed them 3-2 in the third. Blyth then scored four goals • in the last seven minutes to win 6- 3. The team then moved on to a semi-final game against Mount Brydges, who scored three first period goals and went on to win 4- 1. The loss was also costly as Blyth lost two players to injury at the start of the third period. Travis Campbell and Dean Wilson shared the goaltending duties for Blyth. Blyth point getters were Adam last year's 20-2 shellacking was something they were trying to forget. Both teams came out forechecking and backchecking — just playing tough defensive hockey so as not to give up the first goal. The All-stars were the first to get on the board as Kincardine Bulldog Chris King scored. Sangster and Curtis Pinder of Mount Forest earned assists. Anderson was handed a hooking penalty at 10:08 and just two seconds after getting out of the bench, the Cullitons tied the game on a goal by Brad Wilkins. Just under two minutes later, the Cullitons took the lead as Jaren Eydt tallied. The Cullitons took a two-goal lead at 1:24 of the second period as Eydt netted his second of the game. With 3:38 left in the second period, the All-stars got back to within one as King tallied his second of the game with help from Hanover's Steve Barfoot and Williams. Walkerton's Troy McDermid tied the game at three at 4:59 of the third period with Pinder and Anderson, one goal, three assists; Joel Arthur, two goals, four assists; Shawn Bromley, four goals, two assists; Dave Ansley, two goals, five assists; Nathan Shannon, two goals, one assist; Bryce Toll, two assists; Derek Cook, three goals, one assist; Mike Bernard, one assist; Matt Anderson, one goal, two assists; Tyler Stewart, one goal, five assists; Darrell McDougall, one assist; Craig Marks, one goal, two assists and Though off to a quick start in the game, Brussels Bantam Reps were unable to hold the momentum through the Jan. 10 contest against Elma-Logan. Brussels got on the board at 11:12 of the first period, thanks to the effort of Marc Fischer. After Elma-Logan tied the tally Sangster assisting. Just 58 seconds later the Cullitons regained the lead, this time for good, as Eydt scored his third of the game. Goals by Jim Bradley and Greg Van Bakel, 25 seconds apart, gave the Cullitons a 6-3 lead. Edyt's fourth goal of the game at 13:13 gave Stratford a four goal advantage.. McDermid's second goal of the game with 1:05 remaining, put the All-stars three back. Nichol and Brian DeBeyer of Mount Forest assisted. Matt Craig scored with 21 seconds left to give Stratford the 8- 4 win. Schultz was handed three minor penalties in the game. King was the most valuable player of the game for the All-Stars and Eydt was the Cullitons' MVP of the game. Following the game, the Ironmen and the Bulls Completed a one-for- one trade. The Ironmen get 16- year-old Kitchener native Shawn Springall from the Bulls in exchange for the first-year Ironmen blueliner Brett Davidson from the Palmerston area. Graham Worsell, one assist. Blyth swept the shoot-out competition, with Dean Wilson as top goaltender and Dave Ansley as top shooter. Player of the game honours went to Shawn Bromley, Tyler Stewart, Matt Anderson and Derek Cook. Defenseman Stewart was selected to the tournament all-star team. In the championship game Lucan defeated Mount Brydges 3-1. three minutes later, Matt McLellan recaptured the lead for the home- towners. Joel Kellington and Rob Kerr assisted. However, the Brussels offense stopped and the defense was unable to hold off the attackers. Elma- Logan won 5-2. The Bulls were at home for three very important games this weekend. With only five points separating Wiarton and Brussels for sixth place in the standings and only three points separating Brussels'and Mount Forest for fifth place the Bulls were looking to possibly move up in the standings. The Wingham Ironmen were in Brussels for two this past weekend last Friday and Saturday nights. On Friday night the Bulls hoped to surprise Wingham and take two points. Chad Lichti scored at 5:07 of the first and Wingham never looked back. With 1:12 left in the first Jason Becker scored and the Ironmen were able to take a 2-0 into the first intermission. Wingham scored the only goal in the second period when former Bull Brian McNichol made the score 3 - 0 in favour of Wingham. There was no scoring in the third and the game ended that way. Wingham was back Saturday night for a make-up game. It looked like the Ironmen were on their way when Brent Sangster scored 18 seconds into the game, but the Bulls tied the game when Curtis Nichol scored on the power play assisted by Grant Jarvis. Wingham once again took the advantage when Sangster scored at ._ 3:59 to give the Ironmen the lead into the second. The Bulls fought back and tied the game when Josh Cressman scored, assisted by Steven Henderson. Wingham scored twice more to make the score 4-2 after the second period. Brussels couldn't find any more offense and Wingham scored two more goals both on the power play to make the final score 6 - 2 in favour of the Ironmen. The final game of the weekend was against Mount Forest whom the Bulls are sitting three points behind in the standings. It didn't take the Patriots long to let the Bulls know that they weren't going to be any closer at the end of this day. The score was 5-0 before Cressman scored, assisted by Dan Sinclair and the goalie Dan Balog. The Patriots scored four more times to make the final 9 - 1. The Bulls play three times again next weekend starting in Hanover Friday ,night for an 8:30 p.m. start, then travelling to Wingham for an 8:30 p.m. start against the Ironmen. They are at home on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. against the Kincardine Bulldogs. This is a big weekend for the Bulls who are hoping to put a little room between themselves and Wiarton. As of this past weekend the. Bulls are still four points ahead of Wiarton, due to Wiarton losing to Walkerton last Sunday afternoon. BULLS' NOTES: Forward Shawn Springall was traded to the Wingham Ironmen for defenseman Brett Davidson from Palmerston. Dan Williams has also returned to the Bulls from the Jr. B Owen Sound Greys and the Bulls have also acquired Chris Minard from St. Marys who has been playing with the Jr. B Listowel Cyclones.
