HANK TEN PAS CONSTRUCTION Brussels 887-6486 Brussels council is going to be taking a good look at two insurance policies before making a decision on tenders opened at the Jan. 5 meeting. While the tender for village cov- erage from OME Jardine was lower than that of the present broker, Frank Cowan, the variables were something council agreed needed further attention before deciding that lower was best. A meeting is being held to review the information in the poli- cy before next month's regular council meeting. *5* A letter was received•from the province outlining billing arrange- ments related the provincial-munic- ipal service realignment. Beginning in January, the clerk will receive monthly statements for social housing, land ambulance, and transit, which for the time being will continue to be delivered by the province on the municipali- ties' behalf. These will be state- ments for information purposes to assist with budgeting. To ease the transition, the province will not begin collecting from municipalities for these until April. No payments will be required until June. There will be no interest charged until that point, though municipalities will be required to pay January through May invoices by the end of June. Monthly invoices will begin at this time, payable within 30 days. Clerk-Treasurer Donna White said "This is a first step to being able to plan the budget." *5* Council agreed to pay one-third of the approximate $5,000 shortfall for the renovations to the lower south unit of the Brussels Medical- Dental Centre. The work is being done so that the doctors' offices can be moved downstairs to improve accessibility. Grey Twp., has also agreed to pay one-third. The Medical-Dental Centre Board had made a motion in April that they would pay up to $10,000. "If we want the doctors there we better spend some money," said Councillor Joe Seili. "It's pretty bad," Councillor Greg Wilson added, "to have to go up two sets of stairs to see your doc- tor." *5* Animal Control Officer Bob Crick was present to give his annu- al report to council. He requested one change to the bylaw which states that fines be a minimum of $50 to a maximum of $2,000. Trick asked that this be changed to a maximum of $5,000 which is what the Ontario Act states. "You can't contradict that. If we had to go to court it would be thrown out. I don't want that. If we ever go to court, I want to win it," said Trick. He added that council might want to consider an increase in license fees in the future as they are lower than many neighbouring municipal- ities. Trick also said many municipali- ties have set licensing fees for cats. "I'm not suggesting you should go that route, but you may want to watch what others do." White said that the biggest prob- lem with this would be budgeting because of all the cats that would have to be disposed of the first few WI hosts euchre On Tuesday, Jan. 6 the Majestic Women's Institute hosted a euchre party of seven tables. It's whether they are hooked into it. White said that with the Health Unit doing inspection, she never knew if someone had hooked into the sewer system. She told of one building where the owner was not paying the charge for sewer ser- vice, because though the building Continued on page 18 HEARING AID CLINIC MARK McINTYRE Hearing Instrument Specialist will be at Brussels Medical Centre 373 Turnberry, Brussels (enter at rear of building) Wednesday, January 21 Call for your appointment 1-800-236-5514 We service and sell all makes of Hearing Aids.
