For Teens, By Teens Some interesting information everyone should know By Amy Crawford These are just a few fun tidbits of information I found while looking through a new magazine called Jump. Did you know That 141 million cans of Spam are sold worldwide each year? Spam is so popular in Korea that you can buy it in stylish nine-can gift packs. If we were to line up all the cans of Spam ever eaten end to end, they would encircle the globe at least 10 times. To actually find anyone who'll fess up to eating Spam is a whole other story. When you're falling, falling, falling, and you bolt awake just before you slam into the ground it means you're falling asleep. Resarch has shown that as we fall asleep our sense of balance and movement shifts from the real world to the dream world, causing a sort of mental twitch, or "fall," as we adjust to the change. Did you know.... That different foods can affect your mood? The best way to calm nerves is to balance the serotonin levels (the mechanism in the brain that helps you relax). Your best bets are com- plex carbohydrates like bagels, pasta and air-popped popcorn. Remember how sucking on your thumb calmed you down as a kid? Sucking lollipops and popsicles can do the same for you now. To combat fatigue chow on foods high in B vitamins, (meat, eggs, whole grains). These natural energy foods will perk you up faster than a cup of coffee ever could, and they won't make you jittery or give you that caffeine crash 20 minutes later. Some foods, no matter how small a portion will just make your ail- ment worse. Alcohol, coffee, tea, chocolate and salt intake should be as low as possible during PMS, as these items aggravate premenstrual symptoms. If you are stressed out don't head for the nearest drive-thru. Eating huge amounts of refined and pro- cessed foods will only add more stress to your body. It's not just hip to be sedated, it's fashionable! Thanks to Canadian sculptor Colleen Wolstenholme, you can buy silver earrings, bracelets and charms made from antidepresants Paxil and Zoloft, and the tranquilizer, Zanax. The hard-to-swallow accessories first popped up on Sarah McLachlan's neck last summer at the Lilith Fair. The only thing missing? Warning labels- as in "Keep out of reach of, well, everyone!" Do nice guys always finish last? A day in the life of a supermodel By Ashley Gropp Nice guys finish last. This sentence is the point of a song my brother often listens to. Recently I told my family that I did not agree with it, then was surprised to learn every single one of them, at least on some level, agreed with that song. I find that to be an astonishing thought — that kindness gets you absolutely nowhere in life. I cling to the belief that what goes around comes around — that in the end, it By Mark Nonkes 1997 is a year to remember around the world. Global and local events have affected the way we look at the world and how we relate to it. Here are 50 events or names to remember about 1997. National and Provincial events - postal strike - Robert Lattimer's short sentence for the "mercy" killing of his severely disabled daughter - bus load of seniors die when tour bus goes over cliff - teachers' strike - municipal elections - megacity of Toronto - Czechs gypsies take refuge - Victoria area teenager brutally murdered - Jean Chretien re-elected for second term as Prime Minister - Eaton's files for bankruptcy - Preston Manning official opposition leader pays to have been a nice person. Sure, maybe sometimes it seems like the nice guy is in last place now, but before it's finished, he could still take the lead. Or maybe he doesn't come in first but gets second or third place. About half the people I've talked to, said that they think that nice guys are the losers and that they also get stepped on and battered in the process. Most of the rest felt that in the end, nice guys will finish ahead of all the people who are rude, greedy, or self-righteous. The - West Coast salmon quota debates with U.S. - Bre-X scandal - Manitoba flood - Guy Paul Morin inquiry - Queen Elizabeth visits London, Stratford - Confederation Bridge links PEI to mainland World events - death of Princess Diana - El Nino - cloning sheep and other scientific breakthroughs - death of Mother Theresa - Mars rover - McCaughey septuplets - Louise Woodward trial, shaken baby syndrome - China takes over Hong Kong - hostages in Peru - Heaven's Gate cult death - Promise Keepers Rally of two million men Entertainment events - Lilth Fair few remaining said that even though they may not finish first, what's important is that nice guys are probably going to have closer and stronger friendships and eventually die happier than the people who put them down. You can call it wishful thinking if you'd like, but I stubbornly believe that in the end, everybody gets what they deserve and that the good people are rewarded. I think I'd find life too bleak if I looked at it any other way. - new TV cable channels - Spice Girls - Jimmy Stewart dies - Men In Black - Howard Stern hits radio airwaves in Canada - computer pets - Rolling Stones return, again - LeeAnn Rimes - Peter Growski retires from Momingside - Beanie Babies - Aqua - Ellen comes out of the closet on TV show and in life - Sarah MacLachlan - Titanic Sporting events - Jacques Villeneuve wins Grand Prix - Tiger Woods golfing success - snowboarding accepted on most ski hills - Mike Tyson needs rabies shot - Detroit wins the Stanley Cup - Blue Jay Roger Clemens wins Sy Young award By Amy Crawford You too can have a supermodel day! 7 a.m.: Wake up, kiss the mirror, eat one rice cake, practice walking in stilettos. 10 a.m.: Untape hands from StairMaster, eat three Baked Lay's Noon: Shower, think about some- thing, take a nap. 2 p.m.: Pull on "Famished" T- shirt, go shopping for Fashion Cafe's new no-cal, nonfat lip gloss- es in all four fab flavors! 4 p.m.: Replace old, fatty lip gloss with new lip gloss, order a whole piece of dry toast to cele- brate the saved calories. 6 p.m.: Go home, step- on scale, marvel at the loss of one whole ounce!. 7 p.m.: Call gal pals Claudia, Naomi and Ele to gush about the lip gloss.
