Brussels PeeWees had a very
exciting weekend playing in the
Howick tournament. Brussels
faced-off against the host team
Saturday morning.
Brussels scored three goals in the
first three minutes. Tyler Campbell
scored on a nice pass from Scott
McDonald at 9:27. Matt Clarkson
scored an unassisted goal, then 15
seconds later Lee Dilworth scored
from Campbell.
Howick got their only goal of
this game at the 6:19 mark to
complete the scoring of the first
period.
The second period was a close-
checking scoreless period.
However, Brussels scored at the
8:45 mark as Dilworth scored from
Campbell and Darryl Houston.
Seconds later Houston scored an
unassisted goal. With two minutes
left in the game Dilworth
completed his hattrick with
Campbell getting the helper.
The final score was Brussels, 6,
Howick, I.
The game of the tournament was
next as Brussels tangled with
Friday night the Bulls travelled to
Kincardine to take on the first place
Bulldogs.
Kincardine scored first on a
power play market at 16:24 of the
first but at 8:49 the Bulls were able
to tie the game on a shot from the
point by Brett Fischer that Darryl
DeRuyter may have got a stick on
and received credit for the goal
with the other assist going to Curtis
Nichol.
The score remained tied into the
first intermission but Kincardine
quickly made the score 3-1, three
minutes into the second period and
eventually took a three-goal lead
into the third period. The final
score was Kincardine 6 - 1.
Dan Balog was in net for the
Bulls and made 22 saves with Matt
McCall of Brussels Minor Hockey
in the backup goalie position. Mark
Wilson and Chad McCallum who
play with the Brussels Juveniles
were also in the line-up for the
Bulls.
With the Wiarton Wolves only
five points behind the Bulls for the
last playoff spot, Sunday
afternoon's game in Brussels was a
must win. The season record
between the Bulls and Wiarton
stands at two wins for Brussels, one
win for Wiarton and two games
that ended up in a tie so either a
win or a tie would give Brussels the
advantage at the erid of the season.
Thedford. End-to-end action and
super goaltending by Bruce Wedow
had a scoreless first period.
Hard hitting and nail biting
expense kept everyone on the edge
of their seats. Thedford scored first
at 8:15 of the second, however
Brussels got that goal back with
1:14 left, when Campbell scored on
a pass from Houston.
The exciting play continued with
good defense by both teams.
Thedford once again took the
lead at the 11:28 mark of the third,
but once again Campbell scored an
unassisted goal with 1:47 left in the
third to take the game into -five-
minute sudden death.
Brussels took just 18 seconds to
capture this hard-fought game. As
Campbell broke away from his
check and hit Lee Dilworth with a
pass, Dilworth scored in the top
corner to give Brussels a trip to the
championship round.
Brussels had one more game
against Wallace. Brussels got on
the board quickly as Houston, from
Campbell and Dilworth scored just
The start of this game was not the
way the. Bulls planned when 10
seconds into the game Wiarton
scored and at 18:17 made it a 2-0
lead. The second period remained
scoreless and it wasn't until 7:48
left in the game when the Bulls got
their first goal when Grant Jarvis
scored assisted by Gary Staples.
With the Bulls all over the Wolves'
goalie in the last five minutes and
scoring chances galore they were
finally able to solve the Wiarton
netminder and get the equalizer
with 59 seconds left in the game
assisted by Dan Sinclair and Rob
Knechtel.
Matt Cain played net in this one
and made 29 saves for the tie.
Next weekend the Bulls play
three games at home with every
game very important. Friday, Jan. 9
and Saturday, Jan. 10 the Wingham
Ironmen are in town for 9 p.m.
starts both nights and Sunday, Jan.
11 has the Mount Forest Patriots
play the Bulls for a 2 p.m. start.
Brussels is only four points
oenina Mount Forest for fifth place
and if the Patriots can be caught the
Bulls would probably face
Wingham in the first round of the
playoffs. Otherwise the Bulls
would play Kincardine if the
Bulldogs hold on to first place.
The Sunday before Christmas the
Bulls welcomed Hanover to town
30 seconds into the game. At the
4:17 mark Campbell scored on a
pass from Dilworth. Brussels took a
three-goal lead as Clarkson scored
on a nice three-way passing play by
Kyle Stephenson and Sean Hoegy.
Wallace answered at the 3:58 mark.
Wallace brought the score close
with a goal at the 5:50 mark of the
third. However this would be as
close as they would get as Brussels
won the A championship 3-2.
A well-played tournament by all
boys involved.
Team members for this
tournament were Bryce Wedow,
Scott McDonald, Devin Blake,
Robbie McClure, Robbie Semple,
called up from the Atoms, Darryl
McClure, Evan Horst, Tyler
Campbell, Lee Dilworth, Sean
Hoegy, Kyle Stephenson, Matt
Clarkson, Adam Hall, Kenny
McCallum, Mark Hunter.
Absent were Darryl McClure,
Jimmy Franken and Scott Glitz.
Coach is Steve Coulter and
Assistant Coach is Merle Hoegy.
Trainer is Murray Houston.
hoping to send the Barons home for
Christmas with their tails between
their legs. This was a fast paced,
hard hitting game by both teams
and at 2:26 on a power play in the
third period Gary Staples got the
game winner assisted by Don
Sinclair to give the Bulls a well-
deserved win.
The next day the Wiarton Wolves
made the drive on a stormy night in
Brussels. Though it ended in a tie,
the Bulls were all over the Wolves
in this game and outshot Wiarton
34-22.
After a short Christmas layoff the
Bulls were back at the arena to take
on Walkerton Dec. 28. The Bulls
should have taken a little longer to
recover from Christmas as only 11
skaters and one goalie dressed for
the Bulls.
In a game that Bulls would like
to forget the final score was 11-1
which tied a league season record
for worst defeat.
Bulls' Notes: Tonight the
Western Jr C All-Star game will be
held in Lucknow at 8 p.m. Brussels
is sending three representatives,
forwards Shawn Springall and
Curtis Nichol and defenseman Brett
Fischer. The Western Jr C All-Stars
will be taking on the Stratford
Cullitons of the Midwestern Jr B
league.
The Blyth Midget Bulldogs had a
light schedule during the holiday
season, but made the most of their
opportunities by winning two more
games, 6 - 5 over Mildmay and 8-1
against Drayton.
Against Mildmay on Dec. 22, the
Bulldogs went toe-to-toe with their
visitors throughout the contest,
trading goals along the way, as
Blyth shaded their opponents 6-5.
Mildmay held a 3-2 first period
lead as Corey Campbell, from Mike
Haggitt, opened the game scoring,
then Darrell "Stoney" Gerrits
notched his first of the night with
the help of linemates Mike
Courtney and Kyle Anderson.
The Dogs scored the only two
second-period goals to lead 4-3.
Novices face-off
Brussels Novice team outscored
a visiting Blyth team 10-1 in recent
hockey action.
Chris Corbett led the scoring
with four goals and one assist. Matt
White scored two goals and
managed two assists. Cory
Chapman scored one goal and got
three assists. Greg Bowers
stretched the net on two goals and
assisted on one of White's goals.
Adam McClure scored once and
assisted on two other goals.
Christopher Jutzi and Chase
Chapman assisted twice on separate
goals. Mitch Blake and Adam
Corbett each gained a point from
defense position.
Andrew McDonald and Kyle
Gibson shared goaltending duties.
Darcey Cook was the lone scorer
from the Blyth team.
Jeff Cowan tied the game on a
Blyth powerplay as he drilled the
puck top shelf after a fine set up
from Haggitt and Anderson. Chris
Carter and Steve Oldfield assisted
on the go-ahead goals as Haggitt
backhanded a high shot past a
fallen Mildmay cage-keeper.
The teams traded two goals each
in the third period to keep the fans
on the edge of their seats until the
final buzzer. "Stoney" completed
his hattrick with both Blyth goals.
One was a screened backhand shot,
with the assist to Cowan, while the
other came off a scramble at the
crease with Courtney recording the
helper.
This was another one-goal game
as Blyth recorded the 'W' with this
6-5 triumph.
The fireworks finally erupted at
home on Dec. 29 as the Bulldogs
ended the year with a flourish,
drubbing the visiting Drayton
Midgets 8-1. Cory Bragg, who
hadn't played since he eyed a
knuckle sandwich in early
December, celebrated his return as
he opened the scoring for the
Bulldogs. Courtney and Haggitt led
the assault as they both recorded
hattricks and also picked up an
assist each.
Cowan assisted on all three of
Courtney's goals while Gerrits, the
third member of the line, notched a
single goal and also recorded two
assists. Single assists were recorded
by Campbell, Oldfield and Mike
Ansley.
The Bulldogs now look for some
quality practice time as the regular
season stretch drive arrives in the
New Year.
