Keisha Jamieson Johnston was one of many paying close attention to the numbers called in hopes of winning their Christmas feast. WMS meets at F. Scott’s The WMS held its meeting at Freda Scott’s on Monday, Dec. 6. Alice Nicholson used a program from the Glad Tidings entitled A Journey to Bethlehem. Ivy Cloakey lit a candle and Rev. Cathrine Campbell read scriptures. A Christmas message was read by Alice and The First Noel was read. Roll call was a Christmas poem or story. The secretary’s report was read by Margaret Siertsema and the treasurer’s report by Ivy. A memorial was held for the late Jean Wightman. The next meeting will be Jan. 10 with the annual meeting on Jan. 17. Residents bowl, play shoot The regular meeting of the Evening Unit to Knox United Church was held Tuesday, Dec. 7 at the home of Muriel Coultes with 19 present including five visitors for bring-a-friend night. Leader Barbara Anderson welcomed everyone and thanked Muriel for hosting the meeting. She read a Christmas Wish poem. The card report showed four cards having been set. Three cards to shut-in members were circulated. Shut-in remembrances will be sent with the afternoon and evening unit contributing to the expenses. It was decided to purchase a new vacuum for the church. Sunday is White gift Sunday with Barbara Anderson’s group being responsible for the lunch. The millennium committee asked the Unit to be responsible for a cake decorating contest for June 24. The cakes are to be served on Sunday, June 25 after the church service. A committee of Muriel Coultes, Loma Cook, and Margaret Cunningham was named. Homes for Year 2000 are January, Mabel Wheeler; February. Ruth Johnston; March, Barbara Anderson; May, Louise Bosman; June, Loma Cook. Loma Cook and Mabel Wheeler presented the program. Mabel read a reading from Children's Aid on ways to improve lives and Christmas. Nazareth was the main reference with readings taken from the book. As well members viewed pictures also in the book. Mrs. Vincent introduced the lighting of the candle. Ada Taylor lit the Hope Candle. Jean Pattison was peace, Pat Hunking was joy. The senior choir sang Is This Not the Land of Beulah? accompanied by Elizabeth Procter. The Old Testament reading was taken from Genesis 17: l-8, 17-19, and the gospel lesson was from Matthew 24: 25-44. The children’s theme for storytime centred around the word in-play at the Belgrave Community Centre on Friday, Dec. 10. Winners were: high lady, Mary McIntosh; second high, Jean Deyell; most shoots, Lois Chamney; low lady, Olive Bolt; high man, Alf Nichol; second high man, Ross Taylor; most shoots, Lloyd Appleby; low man, Lome Campbell. The next shoot will be Jan. 14. joy meaning the same as happy. John Dorsch and Don Procter took up the offering. Kim Higgins and Becky Logan were in charge of the nursery. Mom’s meet Mabel’s Moms met at their regular time on Wednesday, Dec. 8. Those who attended were Crystal Agombar, Zachary and Nicholas; Donna Raynard and Craig; Lila Procter and Jessica; Kim Higgins, Ashley, Shelby and Jarrod Logan. Their topic was Christmas Concerts. Loma stated there are better gifts than those bought in stores. Parcels containing a dove of peace; a candle for light of the world; a Bible for the wisdom of God; a ring for the eternal circle of God’s love. All can share the gifts to enrich the lives of others and their own. Carols were sung throughout the program. The Afternoon Unit of the UCW met Dec. 7 in the Sunday School room which had been beautifully decorated for the Christmas meeting. Kay Roberts welcomed everyone. Lois Chamney gave the treasurer’s report and reported the balances in the penny collection and the over 80s birthday funds. A donation of $50 will go to help with the Christmas shut-in gifts. Mrs. Roberts opened the Christmas service with a reading by Peter Marshall. Janisa Coultes and Edith Vincent compiled the service, though Mrs. Coultes was absent due to illness. Mary Taylor read what she prepared.
