Letters to the editor Seaforth petitions province THE EDITOR, On Tuesday, Dec. 7, we began circulating the petition reproduced below. Please note that this is a general request to the minister of education intended to benefit all the communities of Huron and Perth Counties, not just the Seaforth school cluster. Other communities are invited to reproduce this petition and canvass their communities for support. We, the undersigned request that the Minister of Education of Ontario take such steps as are necessary to ensure that the Avon Maitland District School Board is prevented from proceeding with School Closure Study, now under Board Policy No. 18, until the Board has: a) Complied with the Ministry’s Guidelines for school closure policies b) Adhered to pertinent Court decisions, including those calling for a fostering of real community input and jealous guarding of meaningful participation by persons and groups affected by Board decisions. c) Provided adequate and proper disclosure about the Board’s finances in response to questions directed to the Minister d) Provided an adequate amount of time for the communities affected to respond to school closure study; and e) Provided a fair opportunity, to be heard to the school communities affected by the announced school closure studies. Last minute stocking gifts and stocking stuffers Harris government angers writer THE EDITOR, In last week’s paper Janice Becker’s column concerning the possibility of school closures in our area got my Irish blood boiling again over the Harris PC government. I cannot help but shake my head and automatically think: “They fell for it hook, line and sinker” again, in our recent provincial election. Stop and remember what the PC’s theme was back in March of I995 when Mike Harris, Barb Fischer and Helen Johns were in Wingham. At this time Harris stressed that his party, in its common sense proposal made a resolution to protect health, education and law and order. “Not a penny will be cut from these services.” Well, all I can say he has lived up to his promise, for it is not pennies that we are dealing with but rather millions of dollars. What I find to be so sickening is the fact that his party regained control, even though numerous people’s lives have changed dramatically due to the cutback in public service workers, as an example. I would also like to stress just how quickly they were in there comforting fanners that they would be getting a reimbursement for what they lost in the poor harvest year of 1998. Just like the schools, hospitals, etc., this “comforting” promise was made PRIOR to the recent election. Then, once their foot was back in the door again, they slammed it shut right in our faces. We can be very proud of our accomplishments.' We will be entering the National competition in the summer of 2000. For anyone not familiar with this program, it is a Canadian non-profit organization committed to recognize the efforts and involvement of all (municipal, residential, institutional and social groups) and to improve the quality of life through beautification, tidiness, environmental awareness and heritage conservation. Would your group be interested in planting trees/developing a Hower bed/floral arrangements in our village or adopt an existing bed to keep it neat and tidy? If interested please let one of the committee know and we will be glad to meet with you. For recognition a plaque or sign will be made and mounted in the bed that you are taking pride in. One of our beautification projects will be crabapple trees. Eventually we would like to have a Crabapple Festival weekend in the village. The tree that we have chosen is the “Thunder Child” which has a pink flower and purple leaf. This is a dwarf species and we will be purchasing them at approximately six feet, bare root. The cost will be $29.95. If you are interested in planting one or more trees, you may get in touch with one of the committee members or leave your order at the clerk’s office before the end of March. They will be available mid April and will be in limited supply. We can also have them planted professionally for a small fee. Congratulations to those groups who have already begun their planning for the year 2000. Plans are in the works to hire out the watering of the plants and flowerbeds within the village. We have large and small specific projects in mind and are in need of sponsors. Photograph your projects and submit them to the committee to be compiled for viewing when the judges arrive late July or early August. Photos become the property of the “Communities in Bloom”. The committee is comprised of Luann Taylor (523-4440), Elaine Scrimgeour (523-9554), Nancy Snell (482-5184), Eleanor Babcock (523-4471) and Bev Elliott (523- 4323).
