for B championship
After losing the first game to
Howick at the Blyth Lions Novice
hockey tournament on the weekend
of Nov. 26 to 28, the Brussels
squad rebounded for a win and a
chance at the B title.
In the team’s second game, they
met Belmore, Nov. 27. Brussels
got on the board in the second
when a solo effort by Wade
Stephenson paid off.
Stephenson then racked up two
more in the period with the help of
Thomas Johnston, Ryan Jutzi and
Joel Wilkinson.
Stephenson extended Brussels’
lead when he put his fourth over
the line at 9:53 of the third. John
ston and Jutzi assisted.
The opponent struck finally
breaking the shutout, putting one in
the net at 7:52.
Brian Burgess and Johnston
rounded out the scoring for Brus
sels in the 6-1 win. Assists went to
Tom Cronin (two), Cayli Hunt and
Tyler Deitner.
Brussels went against Zurich for
the B title on Sunday, but were
doubled up.
Zurich had tallied three before
Deitner bulged the twine for Brus
sels at 8:57 of the third. A quick
follow-up goal by Cronin got Brus
sels back in the game, but it could
not be maintained.
Zurich put three more in the net
to Brussels lone goal, for the 6-3
victory.
This past weekend the team
played in the Clifford tournament.
After a 10-0 whitewashing from
a tough Norwich team, the Brussels
squad came back to down Belmore
3-1.
Cody Subject scored in the first,
then Stephenson gave the team
some needed insurance in the sec
ond. Cronin brought them up by
three in the final period. Burgess
and Johnston assisted on the Sub
ject goal.
For the B championship against
the hosting team. Stephenson
earned a hattrick in the first period
to put his team up by three going
into the second period. Subject and
Johnston earned assists.
Subject increased the edge early
in the second only to have Clifford
get on the board and cancel it less
than a minute later. The hosts tal
lied one more before Cronin off the
stick of Evan Ducharme snuck one
by the Clifford netminder. The
opponents managed one more
before Cronin bulged the twine for
the final time off a pass from Deit
ner.
Things got scary in the third with
Brussels unable to find the net,
while allowing Clifford to score
two. However, when the buzzer
sounded Brussels had the B cham
pionship with a 6-5 victory.
The team continued to show win
ning form downing Drayton away
Dec. 5 by a score of 6-1.
After allowing the hosts to score,
Cronin lit the light to go into the
second period with a tie.
Taylor Prior, with an assist from
Ryan Smith put the team up by one
in the second.
Cronin had a hattrick in the third,
while Stephenson tallied one of his

This scramble by the Blyth Midget goaltender was a rare sight during the match-up at home
against Lucknow on Sunday afternoon. The host squad enjoyed a solid whitewashing of

Wednesday night the Brussels
Atom Rep team hosted Clifford in
an exhibition game.
In the first period, two of
Brussels’ defence found themselves
bonding in the penalty box for over
a minute. The other three players
managed to keep Clifford from
scoring however.
Brussels started the scoring in the
second period when Steven Ropp
passed the puck to Adam McClure
who put it past the dark side of the
goalie. Two minutes later, Clifford
tied the game. The players on both
teams played a steady game of
passing, checking and shooting.
With less than three minutes left
in the game, Clifford scored the
final goal, making the final score 2
- I for Clifford.
The Atoms travel to Wingham
Tuesday at 8:45 p.m. to play their
first game in the Silver Stick
Tournament against Ripley.
Atoms have tough week
against Bayfield, Zurich
It’s been a tough week for the
Atom Bulldogs with two losses
against Bayfield and Zurich.
The team travelled to Bayfield,
Nov. 29 and were shutdown by
their hosts. The ‘Dogs did every
thing but put the puck in the net.
Josh Albrechtas put a shot off the
post and Darcey Cook had a num
ber of breakaways, but was
stonewalled by the goalie each
time.
Joel Salverda did a great job in
net for the ‘Dogs, keeping the Bay-
field scoring down.
At home Dec. 2, the team fared
just slightly better losing this one
5-1.
From the drop of the first puck
this was a physical contest. Zurich
tallied early. Despite a powerplay
opportunity giving them a two-man
advantage, Blyth struggled to find
the net.
Justin Dobie tied the score on a
feed by Darcey Cook in the first
but that was the end. Though the
Bulldogs had several chances, they
failed to stuff any more behing the
Zurich netminder.
Goalie Jeff Elliott did a great job
in the Bulldogs net making several
amazing saves to gives his teama-
mates the hope of a comeback.
Coach Haggitt said he was
pleased with the team effort. “We
just couldn’t buy a break.”
Emphasis, he said, would be
placed on improving the play of the
specialty units.
