The Citizen, 1999-12-01, Page 32PAGE 32. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 1, 1999. Corrie's & 23 Huron St., Clinton - I Receiving the nomination Listowel District Secondary School students Randy Milinkovic and Crystal Edgar were presented with their nomination certificates for a Junior Citizen of the Year Award. The pair were instrumental in saving the life of a car accident victim in October. Seaforth prepares to battle AMDSB Members of the Seaforth com munity are informing the Avon Maitland District School Board that they are prepared to fight the possi ble closure of their schools. After the announcement came last week that both Seaforth's ele mentary and secondary schools were on the list to be studied, (Wal ton is also included) Charlie Smith of Seaforth said $14,000 had already been set aside for legal fees for the battle. The money was raised through a letter-writing campaign to Seaforth alumni after the high school was’ first studied two years ago. About 50 alumni donated to the Save the School Fund. Smith’s company. Boilersmith Ltd., has contributed an additional $5,000 to the fund and hopes it will inspire others in the community to optimism and to donate. With the threat on again, SDHS council chair Maureen Agar says the fundraising may have to start again. Though the fund has not yet been registered as a charity. Smith believes the school closure issue is far too important to worry about a tax receipt. Smith has suggested he may soon seek advice from a lawyer regard ing a suit against the school board with an argument based on com mon law. “The bottom line in the legal system is based on fairness and what the board is proposing is fundamentally unfair. We believe that on that basis, we have the pos sibility of a favourable outcome.” Smith also questions the board’s legal right to sell the building built by the former Seaforth and District School Board and given to the cen tralized boards in trust. Anyone interested in contributing to Save the Schools Fund can con tact the CIBC or TD in Seaforth. Also, there will be a meeting, Dec. I at 7:30 p.m. at the community centre for concerned individuals.
