Brussels Livestock report Light lambs range over $177.50 to $195 Total receipts at Brussels L i\estock tor the week ending Nov. 2b were 3,181 head of cattle and 362 sheep and goats. The fed steers and heifers sold at prices $2 to $3 higher. Cows sold steady. On Thursday veal and lambs sold on a fully steady market. On Friday all weights of Stockers sold actively at steady prices. There were 406 steers on offer selling $97 to $105 with sales to $109. One limousin steer consigned by Cunningham Farms, Lucan, weighing 1,515 lbs. sold for $ 109 to Dominion Meat Packers with their overall offering of thirty steers aver aging 1,463 lbs. selling for an aver age of $101.64. One limousin steer consigned by Gordon Brooks, Lucknow, weighing 1,285 lbs. sold for $106.75 to Holly Park Meat Packers with his overall offering of seven steers averaging 1,334 lbs. selling for an average of $102.48. Twenty-five steers consigned by Gay Lea reports record profits More than 400 members of Gay Lea Foods Co-operative Limited attending the Zone 1 meeting in Brussels Monday and learned the co-op had a record year in 1998-99. Net earnings for the co-op reached $4.9 million on sales of $219 million for the year ended Oct. 2, up from $202 million last year. The result will be a $793,000 divi dend to members ($1 per share) and a patronage dividend of $500,000 in cash and shares. John Ellison, a director from Listowel, reported membership in the co-op reached its highest ever level this year at 4,306, up 60 in the past year. Gay Lea membership makes up 20 per cent of all dairy farmers in Ontario. Operations at the Teeswater plant benefited from the closure of the co Jim Howatt, Londesboro, averaging 1,430 lbs. sold for an average of $104.37 with sales to $106.25. Ten steers consigned by Howard Martin, Brussels, averaging 1,405 lbs. sold for an average of $102.78 with sales to $103.75. Thirty steers consigned by Glenn Coulthard, Stratford, averaging 1,443 lbs. sold for an average of $100.05 with sales to $106. Forty-eight steers con signed by Bender Beef Farms, Hensail, averaging 1,449 lbs. sold for an average of $99.61 with sales to $104. Five steers consigned by op's cheese plants in Baden and Uniondale. The milk previously sent to those plants was rerouted to Teeswater, allowing the plant to remain open all year long, often processing milk six or seven days a week, instead of shutting down for two or more months as in the past. Among the co-op’s $7 million in capital improvements in 1999 were improvements to the sewage treat ment plant at Teeswater. The com pany also began construction of a new refrigerator/freezer distribution warehouse at its Weston plant, scheduled to open in April, and installed two new boilers at the Guelph plant. Though butter sales remained level with last year at $28.5 million pounds Jim Franklin, vice-president for production said this was a strong Amos B. Sixteen heifers consigned by Hugh Love, Atwood, averaging 1,303 lbs. sold for an average of $101.99 with sales to $105.75. Six heifers consigned by Kada Farms, Bluevale, averaging 1,192 lbs. sold for an average of $101.73 with sales to $103.75. Two heifers consigned by Hank DeJong, Fordwich, averaging 1,247 lbs. sold for an average of $100.55 with sales to $102.50. Seven heifers consigned by Albert Leeuwen, Bornholm, averaging 1,024 lbs. sold for an year because the Gay Lea brand had a 25 per cent gain and private label butter sales were also up. There was also one less sales week in the year. Powdered milk production and sales also gained because the milk previously used for cheese produc tion went into other products. The company’s Nordica brand cottage cheese now has 40-42 per cent of the market and the entire market for cottage cheese increased 4-5 per cent in 1999. Gay Lea’s sour cream has a 21.5 per cent share of the market. Stuart Steckle was re-elected Zone 1 director.
