Busy week for Wingham PeeWee Girls -i was a very busy week for the Wingham PeeWee Girls as they played two league games as well as four matches in a Kitchener tourna­ ment. Nov. 20. the squad took to the ice at home against Port Elgin. The first goal of the contest came at 1 ;08 of the first when Nicole Stewart picked up a rebound to net the puck. Assists went to Michelle Cook and Rachel Elliott. Elliott put the home team up 2-0 at 7:42 of the second frame. Cook picked up the puck just inside the Port Elgin blueline and blasted a shot that was deflected by Elliott past the opposition’s netminder. Brittany Campbell added a score just over a minute later on a scram­ ble out front. She had taken a pass from Ashley Ritchie and needed a couple raps to push it in. Cook closed out the scoring when she intercepted an errant Port Elgin pass and snapped a quick shot to beat the goalie on the short side. Bobby Joe Schiel earned the shutout. As participants in the Fall Fest Tournament in Kitchener, the team played four games over three days, with great success. Strathro-y was their first oppo­ nent, meeting them on Nov. 26. Wingham shutout the opposition white scoring six. Goals were scored by Stewart, Elliott, Brittany Heffer, Campbell (two) and Laura Ritchie. Assists went to Elliott, Stewart, Cook, Campbell, Danielle Good, A. Ritchie, Brandy Thompson, Shauna Berfelz and Nicole Walker. Nicki Berfelz saw action in net and though not called on too often, came up big when needed. Campbell was selected MVP of the game. Wingham ended round-robin play in top spot in their pool and put them in the semi-finals. On Saturday, the girls went up against Burlington and came out victorious. Walker set up S. Berfelz who beat the Burlington goalie with a low shot to the stick side at 2:26 of the first to tie the game at one. Campbell got the go-ahead goal at 9:24 of the second with a nice deflection off an S. Berfelz shot. Wingham wrapped up the win when Heffer assisted Campbell in scoring her second of the game. N. Berfelz made many outstand­ ing saves in net and S. Berfelz was named MVP. Wingham started a three-game Sunday with a match against Woodstock and once egain shutout their opponent. Scoring for Wingham were S, Berfelz, Campbell and Cook. Assists were earned by Campbell, S. Berfelz, Heffer and Elliott. Campbell was named MVP. This win saw Wingham go up against Cambridge in the finals. This game proved to be a thriller right from the start. There were several scoring chances thwarted by both netminders. Wingham tied the game in the dying minutes with a goal by Hef­ fer, assisted by S. Berfelz. The winner was decided on a shoot out with Cambridge taking the victory. Wingham’s goalie N. Berfelz was selected MVP. Coach Mike Stewart said he was very proud of how the team played throughout the tournament. They showed great hustle and were up to the physical action endured. He acknowledged the great support by parents and fans in providing inspi­ ration for the team. The squad then travelled to Clif­ ford for the third game of the day. Their stamina was showing as they downed the home team 5-1. Elliott, A. Ritchie and Cook got on the board in the first. Assists went to Cook, Stewart (two) and Campbell. Thompson slapped home a rebound off a scramble in front of the net at 14:14 of the third. Lauren Hoegy and L. Ritchie assisted. The final tally came off the stick of Victoria Whitfield when she picked up a loose puck in front of the net. Cook and Stewart assisted. Allison Quennell saw action between the pipes and did a great job, only losing the shutout in the latter minutes of the game.
