For the past several weeks, dur ing recess one day, 30 students from Grades 1-4 have been partici pating in a Signing Club. Ruth Anne Hamel, a teacher of the deaf with the Avon Maitland District School Board has been working with a student at Blyth who uses some signing as backup. “The other kids were interested and so we started the club at the end of October.” In addition to numbers and colours, the students have also been learning to sign things for the Christmas concert. “They have been really keen. They pick it up very quickly and are always trying something new,” said Hamel. Though the club won’t be contin uing after Christmas as Hamel’s work is ending here, she said it has given the children “a little taste of something that perhaps some may pursue a litte more if they get the chance.” The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 420 Blyth Scouts get funding Four local organizations have been named as recipients for Ontario Trillium Foundation grants.
