Legion donates to Santa Claus parade
By JoAnn McDonald
What a busy time of year. Almost
forgot to write.
Don’t forget the Santa Claus
parade on Saturday and the
children will have a chance to visit
Santa at the Legion afterwards.
On Sunday, Dec. 12, the Legion
is hosting an afternoon tea
celebrating the year of the Senior.
All seniors are invited to attend and
have a cup of tea and snack and
socialize and visit during the
afternoon. Please come and share
your memories with us.
At the general meeting for
November the Legion decided to
donate $200 to the Santa Claus
parade committee and the use of
the hall. Brussels Public School
was also granted permission to use
the Legion in case of a disaster.
The Branch also gave Tim Jerva
some pins and ribbons to use as
traders when he is away on his
Encounters Canada Trip. He was
also sponsored financially.
Encounters Canada is a Legion
supported effort that allows some
children the opportunity to observe
how the government operates and a
chance at experiencing the arts.
The Branch also wants to
encourage donations to the Huron
County Food Bank and has placed
boxes downstairs for donations.
The Legion donated one hour of ice
time for the Optimist Atom
tournament.
The new Canada Remembers
markers for headstones are now
available and if any veteran’s
family wish to inquire about them
please call the Legion 887-6562.
New Year's Eve tickets are now
available at the Branch. Everyone
is welcome to come to the Friday
night suppers. This week is beef
stew.
Let’s see you at the Branch.
A Note from Betty
As I'm putting this together my thoughts are wondering and wandering
about the news from the week and I find my mind is still on the afternoon
movie, A Muppet's Christmas, a bit classic, a bit bizarre, a lot funny - like
life in Brussels.
On this first Sunday of Advent as we anticipate the coming of Christmas
this movie hit the spot. The characters are like many in my life, their train of
thought takes unheard of turns but always life goes on.
At this time of year when we consciously think of the love we have for
each other, these characters give that love a unique twist.
At times I found myself putting a Brussels name on the Henson folk. Now
that is now what Dickens had in mind when A Christmas Carol was penned
but it sure got me in the Christmas mood.
The Crew at the 5R’s had their annual meeting last Thursday. For a not-
for-profit store which has its own unique way of business, sales were over
$39,000. Not bad for all the stuff you gave us. Thanks to our managers Joan
Jacobs and Rose Hom. Keep the donations coming. What we can’t use the
fundraisers for the city diabetic group pick up. A new expense this year was
over $200 for bag tags - darn.
The Brussels Business Association is pleased with the submissions for
their poster contest for the Santa Claus Parade. Check out the entries in
participating stores while you watch the parade at 3:30 on Saturday. Chris
TenPas looks after the details for this contest and reports that Brigette
Blake, Kyle Griffiths and Jodi McIntosh were the winning artists this year.
Good work!
As well the Business Association has the village looking good thanks to
Donna, Rene and Sue for getting things co-ordinated. As the big box stores
get more profitable it is our responsibility to support local business or very
soon there will be no choice. Keep that sobering thought in mind as you
drive an hour to save a little cash. We need stores at home!
The movie song is still spinning in my head, “Wherever you find love - it
feels like Christmas” and so I think I’ll now go to Listowel and see Chris,
Lara and Jordan and reinforce this Christmas mood.
Bye now,
Betty G.
