By Janice Becker Citizen staff With the support of federal gov ernment grants, Kathy Bromley of Blyth’s community policing pro gram hopes volunteers will be more effective. Bromley attended the Nov. 16 session of Blyth council seeking their support for a better cell phone for use by the volunteers. The equipment currently in use has dif ficulty making immediate connec tions to police on occasion. Council supported her request for money to buy a new phone provid ed she returned with an estimate of the costs. Bromley also told council of a grant program offered by the feder al government to fund such groups under the National Strategy on Community Safety and Crime Pre vention program. Council suggested Bromley and the committee develop a budget for community policing to include a cost reimbursement for gas for the volunteers as well as improved phone equipment and apply for the federal grant. Bromley had earlier suggested that covering the cost of gas may draw out more volunteers, particu larly parents who may be con cerned about paying a babysitter and gas prices. There are currently only seven very active members. Councillor Doug Scrimgeour commended the group on their good work as there was no damage or window soaping on Halloween. Kathy’s Korner By Kathy Bromley On Nov. 8 at Bainton’s Art Gallery, the weekly euchre card party was held. High scores for the evening were captured by Mary Turnbull and Ross Taylor, while low scores went to Edythe Giousher and Ted East. Those who had earned the most lone hands were Bernice McClinchey and Charlie Bromley. On Nov. 15 Carol Daer and Charlie Bromley had the high scores, low scores went to Ruth Jardin and Bernice McClinchey. Margaret Nesbit and Everett Scrimgeour had the most lone hands. Everyone is welcome to attend euchre every Monday night at 8 p.m. in the Art Gallery. On Wednesday, Nov. 17, they were one player short of having four tables at lost heir. The high scores went to Elaine Snell and Graeme McDowell, while Willis and Marie Bromley obtained the low scores for the night. Concerning both the weekly euchre and lost heir card parties, if the attendance continues to be so poor, having the weekly card parties held in homes is the next alternative. It costs to rent the hall and to also give out money for prizes. So keep in mind that if the attendance does not improve, the card parties will no longer be held at Bainton’s Art Gallery. Please take this into consideration. Kathy’s Quote of the Week: The elephant and Volkswagen are as different as night and day, with one exception - they both have trunks at the front.
