Ted Johns performs
scene from ‘Crisis’
at school council day
On Nov. 20, volunteers from
around Huron and Perth Counties
will come together to hear about
educational topics, talk to each
other about mutual interests, and
enjoy a touch of humour in contrast
to the difficult times brought by the
changing education scene.
The School Council Forum at
Seaforth District High School,
hosted by. the Central Region
Schools, will provide workshops
on: Effective School Councils.
Curriculum and Student
Assessment, Quality Daily Physical
Education. Promoting Your School.
Violence-Free Schools. Recruiting
and Retaining Volunteers and Chat
with the Director. Registration for
delegates to choose their workshop
will begin at 8 a.m. and the
program will run to-noon.
A special treat of the morning
will be a one-hour segment, by
local comedian and playwright Ted
Johns, of his popular play on
education. The Great School Crisis
of '99. Carefully researched with
characters based on .people within
the education system, the play
provides a humorous look at a not-
so-funny time in education history.
5 injured
On Nov. 13 just before 3:45 p.m.
a single motor vehicle collision
occurred on Cone. 10 at County
Rd. 1 in Ashfield Twp.
A 1985 Mercury was southbound
on the road when the driver,
Mathew Coulson, 19, of Waterloo
swerved to miss a dog and'lost
control. The vehicle ended up
rolling over several times before

ditch

Wingham and District Hospital for
treatment. Richard Tustin, 12, of
Ashfield twp. received serious

lifted to Toronto Sick Children’s

“This will provide a wonderful
opportunity to briefly forget the
challenges of the new education
funding formula and potential
school closures and see our
education system through the eyes
of someone who can find humour
in the situation" says School
Council Forum Chair Lisa
Campbell. “Perhaps by laughing
together with Ted we will find
ways to move on together and find
solutions to the difficult challenges
we face."
School councils are in place in
every school throughout the Avon
Maitland district. These bodies
work closely with the school
principal and, where appropriate,
the district school board on any
matters that councils or board have
identified as priorities.
A school council liaison
committee is made up of
representatives from the five
regions of the district. This
committee works centrally with the
board on behalf of the district's 58
school councils and promotes the
school council forum as an event
that brings these volunteers
together every year.

Paul Steckle, the Member of
Parliament for Huron-Bruce, on
behalf of the Minister of
Transportation, the Honourable
David Collenette, in co-operation
with the Town of Goderich
representing port users and Sifto
Salt announced Nov. 15 the official
transfer of the ownership of the
port of Goderich to the Corporation
of the town of Goderich.
“The Town of Goderich is to be
congratulated for joining this move
towards a new era of port
management. As a result of this
divestiture, the town and all pert
users will have a hand in the day-
to-day operations of the facility
thus enabling a non-profit Goderich
port management corporation to
respond to users concerns in a more
timely and effective manner,” said
Steckle.
Al Hamilton, on behalf of Sifto
and the other port users, added,
“This action will benefit local
users. The new combination of
local ownership and increased input
by users will permit us to increase
the efficiency and cost
effectiveness of the existing
infrastructure.”
Under the National Policy,
announced in December 1995,
regional and local port sites are
being transferred to other interests
over a six-year period ending
March 2002. In some cases, as in
Goderich, operational ports are
being transferred; while in other
cases they are being relinquished as
Crown land and facilities to
interested parties for a variety of
other uses.
In the instance of the port of
Goderich, the Government of
Canada has transferred the port title
to the town for a price of $650,000
funded by port users.
“Having this facility run by the
people who best know its role
within the community - and its
potential for growth - will allow it
to function in a more commercial
and cost-effective manner. I am
eager to explore the new
opportunities for commercial
expansion and potential spin-off
tourism benefits,” concluded Deb
Shewfelt. Goderich Mayor.
