As a result of this divestiture, the town and all pert users will have a hand in the day- to-day operations of the facility thus enabling a non-profit Goderich port management corporation to respond to users concerns in a more timely and effective manner,” said Steckle. Al Hamilton, on behalf of Sifto and the other port users, added, “This action will benefit local users. The new combination of local ownership and increased input by users will permit us to increase the efficiency and cost effectiveness of the existing infrastructure.” Under the National Policy, announced in December 1995, regional and local port sites are being transferred to other interests over a six-year period ending March 2002. In some cases, as in Goderich, operational ports are being transferred; while in other cases they are being relinquished as Crown land and facilities to interested parties for a variety of other uses. In the instance of the port of Goderich, the Government of Canada has transferred the port title to the town for a price of $650,000 funded by port users. “Having this facility run by the people who best know its role within the community - and its potential for growth - will allow it to function in a more commercial and cost-effective manner. I am eager to explore the new opportunities for commercial expansion and potential spin-off tourism benefits,” concluded Deb Shewfelt. Goderich Mayor.
