Festival stews up fun with panto
Did you ever wonder just what a
“panto”is?
Well, according to Anne Chislett,
artist director of the Blyth Festival
Theatre, the panto production of
Jack and the Beanstalk being pre
sented Nov. 26 and 27 is “a stew”.
Following an English tradition
which many Newfoundlanders
became well acquainted with a few
years back, a panto is a mixture of
vaudeville and a play, filled with
music, dancing and comedy.
Always based loosely on a fairy
tale, Chislett says the writing of a
panto takes “a lot of liberties”.
"There is always a character
called dame--in this case. Jack’s
mother-who is played by an older
man,” she says. “Up until IO or 15
years ago, Jack would have been
played by a woman, but now a man
takes the role.”
There are two comedic villains in
the ilk of Laurel and Hardy and a
good and bad fairy. A Mr. and Mrs.
Giant, local royalty and a two-per
son animal adds to the fun.
A large component of any panto
is audience participation. Patrons
are encourag^l to boo at the vil
lains and cheerfor the heroes.

Truly a family event, the young
sters can enjoy the tale of Jack res-
\cuing the princess while parents
will chuckle at federal and provin
cial political jokes, local humour,
pop culture and the amalgamation
square dance.
Pantos are something older folks
may remember from their child
hood, says Chislett. The matinee
performance will allow grandpar
ents to share that memory with
grandchildren.
For Chislett, “Christmas wasn’t
Christmas in Newfoundland with
out a.panto.”

Attention all music fans! Hold on
to your hats, because The
Backstreet Boys and Brittany
Spears are coming to town!
Okay, so maybe the real
Backstreet Boys and Brittany
Spears aren't coming to Wingham.
but it is the next best thing.
“Backstreet”, along with special
guest “Brittany”, tribute bands to
their more famous counterparts, are
coming to Wingham.
The two Toronto-area based
groups will be in town for one
show on Friday, Nov. 19 at the
Wingham Town Hall Heritage
Theatre. Showtime is 6:30 p.m.
“I would put these guys
(Backstreet) vocally against the real
thing, and they’re better!”
exclaimed Mark Gross of Today's
show Time. Gross manages the two
groups and was in town recently
promoting the event. Gross also
explained that “they (the bands)
imitate the album, not the
singer(s).”
Backstreet and Brittany recently
entertained a group of about 1,400
audience members in Walkerton,
and 11,000 spectators at Paramount
Canada's Wonderland.
