THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1999. 0 bituaries JAMES EDWARD RICE The community was saddened by the loss of James (Jim) Edward Rice of Huronview, formerly of Hullett Twp., Saturday, No<v. 13, 1999. He passed away peacefully and has gone to be with the Lord. He was 90. Mr. Rice was well known to Hul­ lett Twp. residents and those in the surrounding area as the former owner of Rice’s Store. He began working at the age of nine as a grocery delivery boy then advanced to selling papers. He was employed as a stationary engineer at a Woodbridge cotton mill in 1949 then began buying and selling vegetables in the 1950s. Mr. Rice moved with his family to Blyth in I962 and a year later began selling Rawleigh Products. He opened Rice’s Store in 1966 and sold it two years ago. He was a member of the Fellow­ ship Bible Chapel, Clinton. Mr. Rice was the beloved hus­ band of the late Amelia (Hendry) Rice who predeceased him in 1988, and loving father of Winnie Flear (Arnold) of Nobleton, Dorothy Pelly (William) of Guysborough, NS, Marjorie Bell of Shanty Bay and Glen Rice (Della) of St. Thomas. Mr. Rice is survived by many grandchildren, great-grand­ children and great-great-grandchil­ dren. He was predeceased by a daugh­ ter, Eleanor Laroque, and son-in- law Robert Bell. Burial has taken place at Blyth Union Cemetery, Blyth. A memorial service will be held at Fellowship Bible Chapel, Maple St., Clinton, Saturday, Nov. 20, at 2 p.m. Mr. Fred Munnings will offi­ ciate. Arrangements were entrusted to the Beattie-Falconer Funeral Home, Tasker Chapel, Blyth. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the charity of one’s choice would be appreciated. J. DOUGLAS HEMINGWAY J. Douglas Hemingway of Brussels passed away peacefully at Seaforth Community Hospital on ] Friday, Nov. J 2. 1999 in his 87th year after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Grey Twp. on Sept. 9, 1913, Doug was the son of the late Oliver and Jennie Hemingway and the beloved husband of the late Wilma Lowe who passed away in 1992. Doug was a devoted father and friend to Peter and his wife Marlene of Gowanstown, Sharon and her husband Dennis Whittaker of Brantford and Neil and his wife Donna of Brussels. He was the cherished grandpa of John Hemingway of Ottawa, Bob and Carla Hemingway of Waterloo, Paul and Michelle Hemingway of Listowel, Lynn Whittaker of London, Dave Whittaker of Brantford and Joel Hemingway of Brussels and the loved great­ grandpa of Bailey, Joseph and Erica Hemingway. He was predeceased by his brother Sinclair Hemingway in 1991. Doug and Wilma were successful farmers for 45 years and retired to Brussels in 1974. Doug was a member of Western Star Lodge No. 149 IOOF in Brussels, a long-time member and elder of Melville Presbyterian Church, and a volunteer at Huronlea for several years. Doug will be sadly missed by his several nieces and nephews, very dear friends, neighbours and relatives. Friends were received by the family from 1 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. Sunday at the Schimanski Family Funeral Home, Brussels. An Oddfellows service was conducted under the auspices of Western Star Lodge No. 149 IOOF Sunday evening. The funeral service was held at Melville Presbyterian Church, Brussels, on Monday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Cathrine Campbell officiating. Soloist Mrs. Janna Speers Dodds sang In The Garden, Friends and Neighbours and My Ruddy accompanied by organist Mrs. Joanne King. Carrying floral tributes were Doug's daughters-in-law Marlene and Donna Hemingway and son-in- law Dennis Whittaker. Pallbearers were grandchildren John Hemingway, Bob Hemingway, Paul Hemingway, Lynn Whittaker, Dave Whittaker and Joel Hemingway. Interment was in Brussels Cemetery. Provincial President Arthena Hecker addressed the convention, focussing on changes at the provincial level which in turn affect all levels of the Organization. Greetings were expressed from visiting area representatives. Information was presented from the Erland Lee Museum and the Hood less Homestead. The Associated Country Women of the World's 23 Triennial, will be hosted in Ontario in June 2001 at the Hamilton Convention Centre. Scout groups canvass Continued from page 3 Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts canvassed Auburn, Belgrave, Blyth, and Londesboro on Oct. 30 in the annual Scouts Canada Apple Day. A total of $513 was raised to support local Scouting activities. 1st Blyth Group Committee is grateful for the generosity of these communities. All Sections were represented at the annual Legion Remembrance Day Service Nov. 11. They marched with the Legion members to Blyth Memorial Hall. Flag bearers were Jordan Rinn (Beavers), Adam Young (Cubs), Jim Ritchie (Scouts), and Josh deGans (World Conservation).
