A Note from Betty
The weather is once again a hot topic. When will it snow? How cold is it?
Have you heard the weather? The good thing is there is nothing we can do
about it!
The pile of snow last week got me thinking of Christmas and in talking to
Brussels Public School staff heard their concert date is Dec. 15. You'll want
to save that evening for your small friends.
The Community Carol Sing is Dec. 22 is at 7:30 p.m. That’s the night you
sing all the carols you can in an hour. Bring your neighbour to the United
Church and enjoy.
Doesn't that make you think about your Christmas list?
My weekend was spent with 450 folk who volunteer with St. John
Ambulance. Downtown Hamilton was buzzing with workshops, lectures,
discussions and competitions as the business of this 900-year-old
organization was reviewed. We are the world's oldest charity and the
challenge now is competition in the business world. With first aid and
public service as the mandate we will survive.
The hotel swimming pool and excellent meals made my weekend - ah!
This is Remembrance Week, time to pause, time to consider how our lives
would be if our fathers, uncles, neighbours and others had made different
choices. We now live in the best country in the world because they took on
new’ roles as factory workers, medics, farmers, soldiers, sailors and airmen.
The lives of everyone were changed to make this a better world. All our
seniors have stories to share - ask - listen and think.
One of my favourites, because it's happy, is hearing Alma Hetherington
tell of the noise level of the folk returning to Howick on the train from
Listowel and farther. The singing and laughing could be heard fields and
fields away as the train slowly brought the boys home!
What a celebration.
Now all we can do is remember and celebrate our past.
Give a Senior a hug of thanks.
Bye now,
Betty G.

Student sings smalltown virtues
By Amy Crawford
Journalism Student
Humber College
Since moving to Toronto for
school I have met many people
who always ask where I’m from. I
say Brussels and they say “Where’s
Brussels?” or "Brussels Belgium?
How did you hear about this
school?”
Now I know Brussels is an
extremely small town and I
wouldn't expect anyone from
Toronto (other than family) to
know where it is. But these people
need to get out and see some of
rural Ontario, especially what
they’re missing! You can walk
home late at night with no fears,
leave your car unlocked in the
driveway, and barbecue in an actual
backyard not the size of a shoe box.
I was even asked by my new
friend Amy (ironic, but true) if we
had homeless people in Brussels. I
never laughed so hard.
After I tell people the area
around which Brussels is located, I
then tell them there is only about
1,000 people living there. Their
mouths drop open and the question
“What do you do?” follows. My
answer - what can’t I do? I may
have to drive to where I want to go
like buck and does, hometown
talent concerts but the beach is just
a hop and a skip away and there’s
always a party going on. Doing it
responsibly is not a problem, you
know everyone and can stay
wherever.
My parents have spent years
making their own fun with theme
parties called Fests. All their
friends get together and play
games, murder mysteries, card£ and
a lot of silly fun.
Small towns are easier on the
pocket considering to get anywhere
to do anything in Toronto costs
more money. And forget about
walking around at night. (Can I
borrow your mace? Mine has run
out.)
Maybe nobody knows where
Brussels is but I do, it’s my Home
Town, and Toronto with all its
culture, crime, buses, and people
doesn't even compare. Small town
living I have found to be something
one must cherish and am grateful I
can come home to it.
One of my classmates who also
comes from rural Ontario is in the
same boat as me.
Btyth, where’s Blyth?
