Guest speaks at Duff’s
THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1999. PAGE 11.
Couttses mark 50 years
Margaret xCraig and Malinda
Johnston were greeters at Duff’s
United Church on Oct. 31. Guest
speaker for the service was
Margaret Engeland from Stratford.
She opened the service with the
Call to Worship and led the people
in the opening hymn.
The choir sang the hymn Walk
with Me.
She went over the announce
ments including the reminder of the
turkey supper on Wednesday and
asked for help for selling tickets for
the Christmas Home Tour at
Knechtel’s in Brussels on Nov. 5.
Call Maxine Houston if you are
able to help.
The sermon was about encour
agement. The Bible is full of
passages talking about encourage
ment. She told about Elphaz,
Bildad and Zophar who came to sit
with Job in his time of great
despair. They didn't say a word but
their presence was enough to let
Job know that they cared.

Pupils run cross-country
In math this week the
kindergartens started sorting and
classifying using buttons. They
read the story, The Lost Button
from Frog and Toad are Friends.
They painted spooky scenes with
Q-tips and white paint on black
paper. They sang some spooky
songs and made funny faced jack-
o-lanterns. For their Halloween
party they enjoyed a time of
sharing treats with friends, made
witch’s brew and heard about Dr.
Seuss’s pale green pants with
nobody inside them.
Grade Is celebrated Halloween
by painting and decorating real
pumpkins, illustrating This is
Halloween story booklets, baking a
jack-o-lantern cake and making
witch’s brew. They played
Halloween games like Pass the
Pumpkin, Goblin in the Dark and
Dracula’s blood.
Beef supper big success
In talking with a few of the
members of the hall board, I
learned that the roast beef supper
last week brought in $610. The
members were pleased with the
great turnout and would like to
thank everyone for supporting the
hall.
Chris Lee, a member of the
board, said he feels these meals
help develop a sense of community
with their neighbours.
- Another chance to enjoy a visit
with your neighbours will be at the
Walton church turkey supper Nov.
3. What a wonderful way to enjoy
great food and rub shoulders with
old friends and perhaps make some
new ones.
Come out and watch the tryouts
for the KTM Race Team on Nov. 7
at the Lee Race Track. It should be
a very interesting event.
Shannon’s Haunted House and
Halloween party was a huge
success, thanks to many helping
hands. There was a graveyard
scene, funeral parlour, a horror
aged by what they hear. Like the
old gentlemen who came to church
wearing a suit and a hat. It was
noticed that he never removed his
hat during the service. The hat
remained on his head.
The usher went to him and told
him that it was the custom of the
congregation to remove one’s hat
during the service. Then an elder of
the church went and told him the
same thing. He did not remove his
hat. It was then that they sent a
persuasive member of the iadies
group up to explain the customs of
the congregation to the newcomer.
Still no luck.
At the end of the service the
minister explained to the man about
their custom. The man replied,
“I’ve been attending this church for
four years and today was the first
time anyone spoke to me. Today I
was greeted by an usher, an elder,
and a beautiful lady and now by
you. At least I was noticed.”
Next Sunday Joan Golden from
Monkton will be the guest speaker.
The Grade 3s spent the week
reading and writing about
Halloween adventures. In phys. ed.
the class enjoyed all kinds of
physical Halloween games
including crab walk pumpkins and
the giant pumpkin bean bag
accuracy toss. On Friday afternoon
they enjoyed games and treats and
everyone proved to be very good
'blood suckers’.
Congratulations to the Grade 4

Mimi visits Walton Inn
It’s interesting how you can go
somewhere and never in your
wildest imaginings plan on running
into a celebrity but that is what
happened to people who wandered
into the Walton Inn on Saturday.
People could not believe their eyes
and I’m sure some wished that they
hadn’t opened their eyes, when
they were greeted (attacked may
have been a better word), at the
door with a Mimi hug. Drew Carry,
(the Pig! according to Mimi)
couldn’t make it so she had fun
giving out poor, rude service and
hurling insults at the customers,
including calling many of them
nasty names.
