Thanks Linda Bird, president ot the Brussels Legion Branch presents a cheque of $500 to Jill Sholdice of the Brussels Figure Skating Club. Legion commemorates with 2-minute silence By JoAnn McDonald November - the month to remember is here again. Our veterans and those who remember the agonies of war are getting older. It affects those who fought, those who were left at home to work for the war effort. Wives and families wondered if they would see their loved ones again. The next generations will hopefully never see or feel that reality of war, but it is our job to ensure they remember those who did. The Cadets and members of Branch 218 canvassed the towns on Tuesday, Nov. 2 to give everyone an opportunity to get a poppy. If you missed them, poppies are available at many local businesses. There will also be members around town on Saturday, Nov. 6. Have you heard about the two- minute wave of silence? We hope that on Nov. 11 all Canadians will observe this meaningful gesture of silence to remember our nations war dead. Everyone is invited to attend Remembrance Day services at the Brussels Legion at 10:30 a.m. on November 11. Have you heard about the Royal Canadian Legion Child Video Identification Program? It is a program where children in kindergarten, Grades 4 and 8 are videotaped walking, talking, front, left and right views. These tapes could be used if a child ever goes missing. This is done by “District C” and is supported by the 52 Branches of the Royal Canadian Legion in this District. It was approved by the Ontario Provincial Police, all local school boards and of course parental consent is required. The tapes are kept by the school boards. The taping team is coming to Brussels Public School, Grey Central School and Walton Public School on Nov. 9 and 10. Parents are welcome to come and view the taping and should inquire from their local school for the times. Ready for Y2K By Bonnie Gropp Citizen staff Just in case. Brussels councils agreed at its meeting on Monday that a core group should be formed and meet to discuss Y2K and emergency pre paredness. Clerk-Treasurer Donna White said, “We have talked all year about amending the emergency plan. Well, the year is drawing to a close. We should at least get this group together.” She added, “I don’t really feel there’s a need for Y2K because I don’t anticipate any problems, but in Brussels we could have a wind storm, an ice storm. I feel we should get together and review this plan.’ A meeting is to be set for within the next few weeks. 1 "NAME THE NEW 1 MUNICIPALITY CONTEST" The transition board for the proposed amalgamation of the Town of Seaforth, The Village of Brussels and the Townships of Grey, McKillop & Tuckersmith is sponsoring a contest to select a name for the new municipality. A $100.00 prize will be awarded to the successful entrant. Entries can be dropped off at any of the five municipal offices before November 9/99 Plan to attend a Public Information Meeting for the proposed amalgamation of the Town of Seaforth. Village of Brussels and the Townships of Grey, McKillop & Tuckersmith WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 1999 Seaforth Arena - 8:00 p.m. For further irformation, please contact any ■ of the above municipal offices ■l A Note from Betty It’s been a busy week in Brussels. Getting a minister out of town can be hard work, lots of eating and drinking in groups is needed in order to do it right. I think Rev. Chris was sent off from her first pastoral charge in fine style and several of us need a rest. There were sobs and shrieks heard in the days prior to Halloween near the municipal office. On checking, it wasn’t Hugh or Don hassling Donna and Lori but rather the Haunted House was open for business. The minor hockey group did a great job of scaring lots of visitors. Maybe local councils could do a show and tell of horrors - AMALGAMATION! A sight was seen last week that really should have been captured on film, but it happened so fast only the quick have it in their memories. It seems that a garden tractor took a side trip without its owner. On discovering the runaway tractor the owner did a futile sprint, hurrah - Superwoman is on duty, a flash, a dash and a leap onto the ranging mower. Alma Watson saved the ball park fence. What a woman! The Auxiliary of Huronlea is pleased to have the support of JR’s. Go to the corner for coffee on Thursday. The cash from the coffee will be used to finish the pavilion project, things like cement, a crane as well as the purchase of other niceties for all the folk who live under that roof. This has been hard work getting words to paper as my friends in costume keep interrupting to pick up their candy apples. After chatting with clowns, ladies of the evening, Zorro, farmers, fireman and princesses as well as witches of every size, shape and gender my time and space are done. Enjoy the fine weather - go for a walk and visit Jane DeVries. She wants to welcome you to her new home at Huronlea and you can check on the pavilion while you’re there. Enjoy the life you’ve been given. Bye now, Betty G. Anyone with stories or news about the Brussels community contact Betty at 887-9231.
