Blyth hosts musical Halloween party The first-ever Java Shack, a special evening of entertainment hosted by the Blyth Centre for the Arts’ board of directors, will be presented on Oct. 29 at The Garage Theatre on Dinsley Street. The star attraction for the evening will be Juanita Arkell, accompanied by Earl Filsinger. Juanita, a singer/songwriter from Huron County, approached Blyth Festival Artistic Director Anne Chislett, asking for assistance in producing a show that would profile her original work. Arkell’s musical credits include opening for Skydiggers and Canadian music sensation Beverley Mahood and she has shared the stage with Bearcats and Keating Kathy’s Korner By Kathy Bromley Our condolences go out to Mrs. Griffiths, Ula and Olwen Richmond and families in the sudden death of their husband and father, Ray Griffiths. Last weekend I was physically reminded of an old tongue-twister that we had said when I was growing up, “How much wood could a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood?” Yes, you guessed it we were cutting and storing wood in preparation for another season. Even though Saturday was a beautiful day, maybe I overdid it. The next morning, every bone and muscle in my body was stiff and sore, many of which I did not realize even existed! I guess I had better get used to it though, as we still have well over 55 tree tops to cut up. As much as I am moaning over it now, it sure makes you feel good come cold weather, when the stove is crackling away. You can sit back and enjoy the fire knowing what all had to be done. In turn, you appreciate it even more, thus proving that it is worth it in the end. A reminder that every Monday night at 8 p.m. in Bainton’s Art Gallery, euchre games are back in full swing for another season. The more the merrier, so plan to come out and enjoy an evening. Afterall, how often can you order your partner and get away with it? Kathy’s Quote of the Week: The tea kettle is a marvellous appliance. Imagine yourself trying to sing with your nose full of boiling water. Anyone with stories or news about the Blyth community contact Kathy at 523-4497. Jones. She has performed on two CDs - Live at The Harb in Owen Sound as a promotion for the Georgian Bay Folk Society (Summerfolk Festival) and Songs to Shelter, a CD produced as a fundraiser for two women’s shelters. In addition to many solo performances, Ms Arkell is lead vocalist for the all-female trio Cactus Jam - performing three-part vocal harmonies, “everything from Andrew Sisters to the Beach Boys”. She recently appeared in Goderich Little Theatre’s production On Convoy, performing her original piece Sailor's Lament. A self-taught musician who has earned an Honours English degree from Wilfrid Laurier University, Arkell’s music has been called “adult contemporary funky folk with a side of blues but also sounds a bit country every once in a while.” She currently lives in Blyth with three wonderful teenage sons - a working single mom who loves her very hectic life. Earl Filsinger, owner of Filsinger Music in Stratford, an accomplished musician and music teacher who has played all over North America, will accompany Ms Arkell. Ryan Buckley lead guitarist and songwriter of The Ashgrove, will open the evening at 8 p.m. Bom in Barnsley, S. It values the health of the whole person and tries to get to the cause of the problem, rather than treating symptoms. Massage therapy is a natural approach to a healthy lifestyle with little risk involved. Cranio sacral therapy is a light-touch method of evaluating and enhancing the cranio sacral system, the environment in which the brain and spinal cord function. Developed by John E. Upledger, D.O., O.M.M., this manual therapy encourages the body's natural healing mechanisms to improve the capability of the central nervous system, dissipate the negative effects of stress, strengthen resistance to disease and enhance health.
