The Citizen, 1999-10-20, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1999. Scouts visit orchard By Becki Grummett 1st Brussels Scouting Troop On Wednesday, Oct. 13, Scout Canada (1st Brussels Group) went to visit Blake’s Apple Orchard. We learned how to clean and polish the apples. We would like to thank Dave Blake for letting us visit and giving us a taste of his delicious apple cider. It was really good. On Saturday, Oct. 16, we polished our apples and sold them in Brussels, Cranbrook and Walton. We raised over $450, double from last year. Selling a taste of goodness The Brussels Beavers hit the streets Saturday morning, canvassing neighbourhoods for purchasers of their well-polished apples. While others went door-to-door, Sean Slater staked out the Brussels Variety for possible clients. Brook Wheeler writes home Editor's note: Brook Wheeler of Brussels, daughter of Gerry and Brenda, is attending the Culver Girls Academy in Indiana, as a Grade 9 student. She has written The Citizen and our readers describing her unique experiences. Brook, a stellar goaltender, is a member of the school's hockey team. School is going great! I really love it down here eh? My friends catch me saying “eh” quite a bit! 1 guess I didn’t really notice I had an accent until I came here, but I can really notice their’s! I’m enjoying all of my classes, and doing fairly well in all of them too. I take French, freshman skills/leadership, world history, English, math, and science. After school we have a chance to go to any classroom we want to get help or just to work, and then it’s recreational period. This is usually when I had volleyball practice, but now it’s hockey practice, or as the U.S. people would say “hackey!” We are now practising for two hours a day, and then after practice we shower, run back to our rooms, get changed into our uniform ... yes, Brook has to wear a kilt and knee socks ... and then we run to dining hall to be there before it closes. After supper we run back to our dorms for CQ(Closed Quarters) from 7:30-9:30, where we sit in our rooms doing homework for two hours. Following CQ we have half an hour of free time, but we have to be in the dorm, and then we have to be in our rooms by 10 p.m. with the lights out! It gets really busy, we get a lot of homework, but when the weekend comes it's great! Friday night we usually go to the movie. Saturday we have practice, but then we usually go into town, or hang out by the lake if it’s a nice day. On Sunday we have to be up early to start cleaning for inspection, then we go to church, and come back for inspection. Then we’ve got free time until CQ at night. We also have a daily A Note from Betty There are two pretty proud music teachers in our area - Margaret Kai and Emily Cousins. Their students have the marks back from Blyth and Walkerton site exams. Crystal McLellan and Lesley Pepper passed Grade II Rudiments with over 90 per cent. That’s called Honours with distinction - well done! Tinkling the ivories to pass Grade IV music were Nicole White, Rachael Elliot, Justin Ruttan and Amanda Schwartzentruber. Keshia Bishop has accomplished a Grade V this fall. Jonathon Schwartzentruber did well with the Preliminary Rudiments. Everyone of the students finished in the Honours category - excellent. Garrett Jacobs invited Grandpa Malcolm and Grandma Joan to his baptism in Ayr on Sunday. Roy and Nancy hosted a family gathering to mark the celebration. If you didn’t get your Christmas shopping started at the Mennonite Church last week, make your way to the United Church on Friday evening for a preview of the treasures to be had at the Silent Auction on Saturday. There are many unique items for sale. Come and see. You have to be quick to welcome neighbours or, as in the case of the Exel crew, they left after one visit from me. Was it something I said? 1’11 be more careful when the new folk move in. inspection, but it isn’t as strict as on Sunday’s. It’s been quite a change from one hallway at BPS to 36 buildings on an 1,800-acre campus. I’m also really enjoying all the wonderful people I get to meet.' I’ve got friends from Canada, Germany, Japan, Mexico,z and all over the United States! I’m getting really excited because the hockey season officially starts in about two weeks! I can’t wait! I really am enjoying myself here, but it is kind of tough being away from home. I miss my family, friends, and everyone in Brussels a lot!!! Hopefully I’ll see everyone over Christmas break though. I’ll be home for about 3 weeks! If anyone would like my address it’s: Brook Wheeler, Culver Girls Academy, 1300 Academy Road, Box #228, Culver, IN 46511-1291, USA and my email is; wheeleb@culver.org I love getting letters and emails!!! Brook Wheeler. P.S. I can’t tell you how much I love getting The Citizen'. It makes me feel like I'm not as far away from home as I really am and it keeps me up to date on the Brussels news!
