Meeting in Wingham tonight to discuss OPP policing
A meeting will be held
Wednesday night in Wingham
between Huron County's adminis
tration, finance and personnel com
mittee and the Town of Wingham to
discuss the situation with the town’s
police force and county-wide OPP
policing.
The county passed a bylaw earlier
this year assuming jurisdiction for
policing in the county and prepared
to sign a contract for OPP policing
of the whole county, excluding
Wingham, which wanted to retain
its own police force. Sub-
sequent correspondence from the
Ministry of the Solicitor General
threw into question whether the
province would allow the Wingham
force to continue.
In September, the town had sent
a $151,000 bill to the county for
policing in Wingham from the time
the county assumed the cost of
policing in the county after the
bylaw, until Sept. 20.
The county’s committee, howev
er, returned the bill to Wingham
saying that under the county’s
bylaw the Wingham force still
exists.
Meanwhile the amalgamation
proposal for Blyth, East Wawanosh
and Wingham has been placed on
hold pending resolution of the
policing issue.
911 on schedule County passes more plans
for fall of2000
The 911 emergency calling sys
tem could be in place in Huron by
the fall of 2000, six years after the
county formed a committee to
implement it.
The next step for the project will
be construction of property number
signs this winter and installation of
the signs next spring. As well work
will be done to assist the telephone
companies in ensuring each munic
ipal address is linked to the phone
number of the property, the Sept.
14 report of the county’s adminis
tration, finance and personnel com
mittee said.
Two more amalgamation plans
were accepted by Huron County
council Thursday, bringing to three
the number of new municipalities
approved by the county.
County council voted to support
the amalgamation plan for Hay,
Stanley, Bayfield, Hensail and
Zurich as well as the controversial
Walton news
plan for Hullett Twp., Goderich
Twp. and the Town of Clinton (the
Central Huron group).
Blyth Reeve Ma$on Bailey origi
nally voted against the approval of
the Central Huron proposal because
of his concerns about Goderich’s
demands for border adjustments,
but he later asked that the vote be
made unanimous.
Council also passed a motion that
the composition of county council
be based on one representative for
each 4,000 electors. Representa
tives will include the head of coun
cil plus, where numbers warrant,
the deputy head of council and any
additional council members
allowed by the requirement for
numbers of electors.
A public meeting will be held at
the Nov. 4 meeting prior to the
passing of the bylaw.
Picking apples
Matt Chalmers and the rest of the Blyth Beavers braved
grey skies and rainy weather to pick apples and tour the
processing plant at Blyth Brooke Orchards last Tuesday.

We would like to welcome into
the community of Walton, Lori and
Lindsey Roberts and their children
Alison, Emily, James and Nathan.
The family moved here from
Haliburton and are farming in the
area.
Doug and Marjory Fraser spent
Thanksgiving weekend with their
daughter Carolyn and her husband
Jerry in Kitchener. They attended
Emanuelle College Church and
watched the Oktoberfest parade on
Monday.
I have always loved listening to
people’s stories of when they were
young. To go back in time and try
to imagine what it was like. I would
like to talk to many of you in this
community and to get some of
those wonderful stories to put in
this paper. The title of it would be,
‘I remember when I was a kid...’ It
can be about anything, any event,
happy or sad ... just a memory of
what it was like way back when.

downstairs.
It was a beautiful fall day for the
wedding of Patti Harrison and
Jason Vandemeere, both members
of the Branch. Many members were-
guests and enjoyed hearing Sandra
Josling sing during the ceremony.
Congratulations to the happy
couple and the now relieved
parents, John and Julie.
It is only about a month away
and it will be Remembrance Day.
The Royal Canadian Legion is
promoting a Canada-wide project
called the “Two minute wave of
silence”. It is asking everyone to
participate in a significant act of
remembrance of the sacrifices
made in past wars and conflicts of
the 20th century. We ask everyone
to stop what they are doing on Nov.
11 at II a.m. for two minutes to
remember. If you are at work or on
the street or at home, take a
moment to pause and reflect on
how different our lives could have
been without the sacrifices of our
fallen soldiers. It is the pledge of
the Royal Canadian Legion
member that “We Will Remember
Them” and we ask that all
Canadians do the same.
A reminder that dues are due and
the lucky early bird winner was
Murray Lowe.
