Gerth finishes second in cross-country The cross-country season for F.E. Madill Secondary School students got underway recently with an invi tational meet at home. Five hundred runners from Oxford-Elgin, Middlesex, London, Lambton, Bruce and Huron-Perth competed in the pre-WOSSA event. Sjaan Gerth of Belgrave captured a second in a field of 64, in the Senior boys 7,000-metre race. He had a time of 24:31. The Midget and Junior girls’ teams each placed fourth overall in their divisions. In the Midget girls’ 3,000-metre race, Kerri Meier took 19th, Kris ten Palmer 37th and Michelle Nixon, 4Jst of 57 runners. Amanda Palmer placed 19th and Laura Meier, 20th, in the Junior girls 4,000-metre event. Seventy eight runners competed. Melina Hussey placed 29th out of 52 in the Senior girls’ 6,000-metre. Club visits cottage The Walkerburn Club had the pleasure of visiting Ethel Ball at her cottage home at Wildwood by the river for their late September meeting. Eight were able to attend. Prayer was given followed by the Lord’s Prayer in unison. Plans were made for the Halloween party on Oct. 25. This will be at Betsey Verwey’s home and will begin at 8 p.m. Masquerade attire or pay a fine is the night’s order. Roll call is canned goods. Betsey Verwey will be responsible for lunch and Vera Penfound for the program. Collection was taken and Bernice Norman, treasurer, gave her report. A man’s view on women’s meetings followed by the woman’s reply was then enjoyed. This was followed by a Canadian quiz. One on Canadian geography put women’s brains at work. Nine Walkerburn club members also enjoyed a trip recently to see the quilts at the Stratford Museum. They are indescribable! They also stopped for lunch at Mitchell on their trip there. Thank God, sermon topic Musical prelude with Nancy Park, organist invited everyone for Thanksgiving Service at Auburn United. Rev. Paul Ross gave words of welcome. The choir sang Praise the Lord. The children’s chorus was sung and Rev. Ross spoke to them about The Lord’s Prayer. Scripture from the Old Testament was Exodus 32. In this the Lord told Moses that the people of Egypt were not following his command and Moses asked the Lord to remember his servants. The New Testament reading was from Matthew 22 where Jesus gave the parable of a king who made a marriage for his son and brought guests of all sorts to the wedding. Rev. Ross’s sermon was “Thank God”. People have much to be thankful for, he said. Bernice Gross and Nancy Park played a piano-organ duet as offering was received. Auburn United Church board met at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 12 in the Sunday School room. Next Sunday, Oct. 17 is the anniversary service. A lunch will be served. People Ell and Kay Lapp have returned from their trip. They went first to Colorado to visit her sister and nephew, then to Abbottsford, BC to visit their son Bill and his family.
