This production was extremely well-received by audiences and critics alike. Critics hailed this latest collective effort headed by v Paul Thompson as “a work of astonishing grace, wit and wisdom. It is a piece of theatre that, for all its charm, achieves something lasting and important and richly resonant.” In addition, it was proclaimed to be “...the kind of production that has secured the Blyth Festival a prominent place on the ever changing map of Canadian theatre.” Due to the extraordinary success of Death of the Hired Man during its limited fall run, Blyth Festival Artistic Director Anne Chislett has chosen to remount this exciting and innovative piece of theatre as the first production of the 2000 Season. Gordon Radford of Londesboro was the winner of Blyth Festival’s Test Your Threshing Knowledge contest. Many entries were submitted for considering during the contest. Radford correctly identified all three threshing items, a crank used to turn the blower, a straw-walker which separates the grain from the straw and a concave which threshes the grain as the cylinder turns within the machine. Radford is the recipient of two tickets for the opening night performance of Death of the Hired Man during the 2000 season, dinner for two at a Blyth Festival country supper prior to the performance, and a signed season poster as well as a one-year membership to the Blyth Festival.
