The Wingham police force is to be dissolved as of Jan. 1,2001. Though a community disbanding its force in the past had been responsible for all costs, the recent passing of a bylaw at the county level, concerning policing has left the matter unclear Some parties believe it is still Wingham’s responsibility while others feel it should be covered by the county, said Slewart. Even talks with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and the solicitor general’s offices in Toronto has resulted in different answers. Though no costs will be borne by Blyth or East Wawanosh taxpayers, it has been recommended the issue is resolved before consideration is given to the amalgamation plan, said Stewart. It is hoped a solution will be in place so the plan can be assessed at the November session of county council.
