4,277 head of cattle, 263 lambs up for sale
Total receipts at Brussels
Livestock for the week ending
Oct. I were 4,277 head of cattle
and 263 lambs and goats.
On Monday at our show and sale
fed steers and heifers sold on a
steady market. Tuesday fed steers
sold $l lower with heifers selling
$l to $2 lower. Cows and bulls
sold steady. On Thursday veal sold
$2 to $3 lower with heavy lambs
selling under pressure and light
lambs steady. All classes of
stockers sold steady.
On Monday Sept. 27 we held our
90th Annual Show & Sale. There
were 301 steers and 96 heifers on
offer. The following is a partial
listing of the results.
Grand Champion and Champion
Carlot: Sydenview Stock Farms,
Port Lambton - Ten limousin
heifers averaging 1,181 lbs. sold
for $105 purchased by Norwich
Packers.
Champion Pen of Five: Kada
Farms, Bluevale - Five Blue
Belgium steers averaging 1,492 lbs.
sold for $100.25 purchased by
Dominion Meats.
Reserve Carlot: Doug and Ruth
Osgood, Lambeth - Twelve
limousin steers averaging 1,356
lbs. sold for $99.75 purchased by
Norwich Packers.
Reserve Pen of Five: David
Gratix, Waubashene - Five
limousin steers averaging 1,369
lbs. sold for $103 purchased by
Norwich Packers.
Charolais: Cunningham Farms,
Lucan - Ten charolais steers
averaging 1,472 lbs sold for
$92.25 purchased by Ryding
Regency.
Limousin Heifers: John Polo
Limited, Guelph - Five limousin
heifers averaging 1,061 lbs. sold
for $100 purchased by Dominion
Meats.
Angus: Murray Shiells,
Wingham - Five Black Angus
IPM, ‘Sunny Match9
Though ‘1999 sunny match
‘didn’t break Huron County’s
record match of 1978 near
Wingham, the ‘money match’,
which brought close to 200,000, it
did attract an estimated 170,000
visitors to the Dashwood site.
Campsite traffic increased each
night from 1,120 sites on Monday
night (Sept. 20) to 1,232 Tuesday
and 1,395 on Wednesday.
Overflow sites were added.
Daryl Hostrawser of Belwood
was the Ontario and IPM Tractor
Champion Plower for accumulating
the most points over four days of
plowing at the International
Plowing Match. Reserve was
champion Ken Ferguson of
Stouffville. These men as well as
Darrell Fried and Greg Timbers
and Junior Plower Eric Ferguson of
Sunderland advance to the
Canadian Plowing Championships
in September 2000 in Quebec.
Ferguson and Joel Perriman of
Ayr also received a two-year
$2,500 scholarship from the
Ontario Plowmen’s Association for
use at an Ontario university or
agricultural college. Ferguson was
also awarded the Elliott Moses
Memorial Special and the Sidney
Sisler Memorial Junior Champion
Plowperson trophy.
In the horse plowing event,
Beverly Brown of Ayton was
champion of the Class One. Group
One Plowing with Horses event;
Allan Lambie of Wyevale was
reserve champion. In Group Two,
David Gamble of Lyndhurst was
champion with Gabriel Levacalier
of Osgoode as reserve.
In Class One, Specials, Horse
Plowing event, Brown was
champion with Lambie as reserve
The Harold Nie Memorial
Special trophy went to Douglas
Boyd of Thedford.
The Byrnell Wylie Memorial
Special went to Beverly Brown
who also won the Eugene Timbers
Memorial Award.
The Edgar Howatt Award was
won by Jason MacRobbie of
Cambridge.
In the Class Two, Group One,
plowperson using two-furrow
plow's event, Nathan Fried of
Bright was the winner with Paul
Speller of Ailsa Craig as reserve.
The group two winner was Eric
Ferguson of Sunderlar with Trevor
Perriman of Ayr as reserve.
In the three-furrow plowing
competition, Elmer Erb of
Millbank was champion while
Allan McNeil of Alvinston was
reserve.
Wayne Downie of York won the
four-furrow plow competition
while Allan Millman of St. Thomas
was reserve.
The Canadian Plowing
Championship was held Sept. 17-
20 near Dashwood. Greg Timbers
was awarded the champion plower
trophy at a banquet Sept. 20 in
Hensail. Reserve champion was
Ken Ferguson. Trevor Perriman
was named top junior plowman.
Antique plowing champions
Competitors in the antique
plowing event pitted their skills
against each other in three
categories: most points, best crown
and best furrow/finish.
In the most points category, Gord
Walton won Class One; Tom
Forbes won Class Two and Donell
Nunnikhoven won Class Three.
Gord Walton also received the
best crown trophy in Class One
while Forbes took Class two and
Glen Sharpies won Class Three.
Walton again won the best
furrow/finish event in Class Two
with Robert Moffatt in a tie while
Nunnikhoven won Class Three.
There was no Class One in this
event.
Jim Cox won the trophy for the
Most Original Restored Antique
Tractor.

Stress relief
counselling
continues

Gabriele Del Bianco is available
to assist any individual or family
related to the agricultural sector
deal with stress.
It is evident that many farm
families could benefit by receiving
assistance to help deal with the real
effects that the stress of farming
has on physical health, family
relationships and emotional health.
Stress can lead to aggression,
depression, apathy, moodiness,
addictions, and an increase in
accidents?
Everyone, not just fanners, needs
to start viewing counselling as a
normal way of keeping lives in
better balance.
In an effort to make this
counselling service more
accessible, Del Bianco will
continue to be available to come to
your farm or at his office in Auburn
by calling 526-7625. The service is
provided at no cost to the farmer.
